(Catholic) Church urges yes vote on driver's card measure (Oregon) (Illegal aliens)

Measure 88, on Oregon’s November ballot, would allow immigrants without documents to drive after meeting all other requirements. The measure, which would affirm a law put in place by the Oregon Legislature in 2013, has won the support of many religious groups, including the Oregon Catholic Conference.

“The Oregon Driver Card is especially important for immigrant families among us who are our modern day neighbors,” says a statement from the conference, the public policy arm of the Archdiocese of Portland and the Diocese of Baker.

Oregon...isn’t that the state where the fiancé of the current governor (Dem) has admitted to marrying then divorcing an illegal alien to help him stay in the country?

As a lifelong Catholic I can state there is absolutely no shortage of far left liberals in my Church. One need to look no further than the likes of the Kennedys, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelousy, and countless others. But there are also a large number of prominent Catholic conservatives in the Conservative Movement and the GOP as well.

The Catholic Church is not a political party. When I attend Mass I do not expect to hear a lecture on politics. But sometimes we get one. When they talk about life issues, I am generally in agreement, although I support the death penalty and my Church does not. And I am absolutely appalled at the position my Church has taken on the topic of illegal immigration.

The current Pope is certainly a liberal, but his past predecessor was quite conservative on questions of Church policy. I think the best policy is to stick with what is written in the Bible and avoid politics altogether.

There are some who suggest that conservatives such as myself should leave the Catholic Church altogether. Yet when I look around at most other churches, especially the mainline Protestant churches, I see the liberals gaining ground there as well.

So....I’m staying put in my pew.

What are they going to put on the address part of their license? Mexico?

>> Bottom line to all FR Catholics: Your church is hopelessly Leftist except for the abortion and same-sex marriages issues... and that will change soon enough. <<

The Catholic Church has had the same position on marriage and abortion for 2000 years and its never changing, unlike those protestant churches that get taken over by liberals every week. The leftists will still be crying about how "strict and old fashioned and out of touch" the Catholic Church is 50 years from now. Sorry to disappoint you and the liberal media.

Furthermore, the Catholic Church is much more conservative than any protestant church on issues like contraception. They all caved to 'secular society decades ago.

>> (Speaking as an ex-Catholic who watched the church walk away from us decades ago.) <<

Let me know when you find a find a protestant denomination that vocally opposes illegal immigration, and I'll consider joining it.

Did you notice I wrote these licenses should be temporary and that the applicants should be reported to ICE? My main concern is public safety by making sure those who are driving have demonstrated they are able to do so safely. If improved safety has not been the case then I would oppose the measure.

PS. I don’t buy the BS that not approving the proposed law means families will be torn asunder and people will be unable to get their children to doctors or school. That is complete nonsense as people have been managing to do that even when they don’t have a driver’s license. They’ve even managed to get to jobs or school without one.

Having a driver’s license is not a right. It is a privilege which I can see the State extending to illegal immigrants in very limited and restricted circumstances. One of those of course would be having insurance.

Which makes me ask? If the accident rate is higher amongst illegal immigrants would insurance then be out of the financial reach of these applicants? What then? Do we waive the insurance requirement? I would answer “Hell No”, but then again I’m not arguing that a DL is a right which is what the Bishops in the article seem to be doing.

“Bottom line to all FR Catholics:

Look up Isaiah 5:20.”

Plenty of catholic churches are pro-gay. But that is becoming true of more and more denominations as well.

Gasp!

We have them in my Baptist church too. They are in the minority though.

I just renewed my drivers license and supposedly to comply with federal requirements I had to produce a certified copy of my birth certificate, my social security card and two pieces of mail like utility bills to confirm I lived at the address shown on my license in addition to my previous license with my photo. If I have to give this type of documentation as a US citizen, how the heck are states going to give illegals drivers licenses without complying with these federal requirements? Obviously illegals will be able to get drivers licenses with any phony name they want and no proof of anything. That makes driver’s licenses totally a joke as any identification.

avoid politics altogether.

It would be best if they did. I remember some years ago one visiting priest gave a sermon excoriating Republicans and Bush. A large number of people (including yrs truly) got up and walked out. The pastor apparently told the rest of the priests to muzzle it, because for several years thereafter the liberal extreme viewpoints were not explicitly stated. New pastor, and now the sermons hit things like immigration, and briefly alluded to "gun violence"

I suppose if I could choose a church and a pastor based upon politics and ideology, I would join John Hagee’s church. I watch him all of the time on TV. But I don’t live in San Antonio. I also like Hal Lindsay and Joyce Mayer among the TV ministers.

Over the years I have heard it said that conservatives should leave both the Catholic Church and the Republican Party. I have decided to:

1) Remain Catholic
2) Remain Republican
3) Remain conservative
4) Let the chips fall where they may.

That makes no sense at all. It is a bona fide idiotic idea. IT should be restricted to driving within the state of Oregon. Nothing more. No using it like a valid I.D.
