Transcripts Kept Secret for 60 Years Bolster Defense of Oppenheimer’s Loyalty (NYT)
New York Times ^ | Oct. 11, 2014 | William J. Broad

At the height of the McCarthy era, J. Robert Oppenheimer, the government’s top atomic physicist, came under suspicion as a Soviet spy. After 19 days of secret hearings in April and May of 1954, the Atomic Energy Commission revoked his security clearance. The action brought his career to a humiliating close, and Oppenheimer, until then a hero of American science, lived out his life a broken man.

But now, hundreds of newly declassified pages from the hearings suggest that Oppenheimer was anything but disloyal. Historians and nuclear experts who have studied the declassified material—roughly a tenth of the hearing transcripts—say that it offers no damning evidence against him, and that the testimony that has been kept secret all these years tends to exonerate him.

“It’s hard to see why it was classified,” Richard Polenberg, a historian at Cornell University who edited a much earlier, sanitized version of the hearings, said in an interview. “It’s hard to see a principle here—except that some of the testimony was sympathetic to Oppenheimer, some of it very sympathetic.” …

Note that the NYT is using rather ambiguous language. It would have been the liberals who kept this secret for all this time, after all. Documents are at this link; best to make one’s own judgments.

Well he led the development, for the U.S., of the most devastating weapon ever devised. If he was playing for the other, he sure was lousy at it.

Probably one of the ways the left was setting up McCarthy too. A living strawman makes a more sympathetic target.

Or McCarthy was overreaching. But I know we’re not allowed to insinuate that here.

Anything’s possible, but the state of the government today indicates that McCarthy was certainly on to something at the very least.

McCarthy may well have been something less than completely accurate in all his accusations but...he damn well was right to point out that there were many, many reds...and red sympathizers...in numerous government positions, including top positions.

Hell,we even had a Vice President who was a Marxist back then (as well as one or two since then).

Thanks for posting one of the most consistent policies of the NY Slimes:

"NYT still defending commie traitors after all this time!"

Oppenheimer belonged to groups led or infiltrated by Communists; his brother, his wife and his former fiancée were party members.

Well, now...that doesn't lend to any suspicion whatsoever, does it?

Nervermind the fact that both Oppie’s brother and his lover Jean Tatlock were both card carrying members of the Communist Party, and that he had attended party meetings himself.

It was halfway through the article before they said anything relevant.

“...his brother, his wife and his former fiancée were (communist) party members.”

There is no reality where a person would be trusted with our nation’s most important secrets with connections like that.

NONE.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Robert_Oppenheimer#Private_and_political_life

Add to that that his circle of friends, acquaintances, students, charities, etc., who all had connections with the communist party.

Sorry for the man, but the evil of communism tainted everything touched by it.

Given that the Slimes hates the fact that the USA has atomic weapons, why would they be defending Oppenheimer?

Oppy spearheaded the development of the atomic bomb, he didn’t do it for the sake of capitalist America, he did it for the sake of Communist Russia. Remember, the soviets, Britain, and America (the big three, Stalin, Churchill, and FDR) had sworn unconditional surrender upon their enemies, Hitler and Japan.

I don’t believe Oppy was motivated by any patriotic fervor for capitalist America, what motivated him was his desire to to destroy Japan, Communist Russia’s enemy.

Just one man’s opinion, for what its worth.

Very good point. There was/is a posting on Drudge about a book coming out (yet another one) on the disco club studio 54, and all the cocaine hedonism, etc. of the 70’s. It reminded me of the Walker spy ring and how the central Walker was a “swinger” who did drugs and enlisted his family members. Both he and his cousin just died at Butner Federal, of cancer i believe. Devastating damage to our naval communications and secrests- they should have been shot.

Reminds us all of the times and how the commies manipulated the “elite” powder monkeys to give up secrets. It was no different than oppenheimer, whose entire kinfolk were communists and had working “handlers” from the soviets to gather intel from them. It was through the english pal of oppenheimer’s that the bomb secrets made it to Stalin.
They played on every ego need, especially that of “peace”.
The disco crowd was a group in the 70’s of useless elitist coke heads and perverts, and a security clearance was hard to get.
Leads to thoughts about obamaumao and his “history” as a gay/bi communist’s sponsor at the behest of his swinger grandparents (not often written about them), one Frank Marshall Davis.

Based on what evidence? McCarthy also went after George Marshall. Clearly he was prone to overreach.

We would be beating a dead horse, many posts already on this thread why McCarthy would have been justified about Oppenheimer. As to Marshall, haven’t a clue.

The very fact that McCarthy is the communist left’s favorite punching bag, and in view of what we have foisted upon on us by the Clinton and Obama years, is reason enough for me to come down on his side...even if he may have overdone it a bit here and there. Would to God we had a senator like him around today!

“The very fact that McCarthy is the communist left’s favorite punching bag, and in view of what we have foisted upon on us by the Clinton and Obama years...

I include one more thing, the NY Slimes trying to tell us now, so many years after the fact, that McCarthy was wrong about Oppenheimer. The NY Slimes of all people.
