Huckabee: "I'll Leave GOP, Become Independent"

Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee warns he'll leave the Republican Party if it stops opposing same-sex marriage and abortion.

"I'm gone. I'll become independent. I'll start finding people that have guts to stand. I'm tired of this," he told the American Family Association's radio show.

His comments follow the recent Supreme Court decision not to take up gay marriage.

"I am utterly exasperated with Republicans and the so-called leadership of the Republicans who have abdicated on this issue when, if they continue this direction they guarantee they're gonna lose every election in the future," Huckabee said. "Guarantee it."

The Republicans are not going to endorse gay marriage or abortion - they may not condemn it in the numbers you would like - but they are not going to endorse those. That’s a straw argument.

Plus that ignores what Huckabee is doing here. It’s not the great stand on principle he’s making it out to be. I am not fooled.

Well, it's not as if the GOP has had that good of a track record on fiscal or constitutional issues, either. So it's not just the "SoCon warriors" who are starting to get disenchanted with them...

Your response with due respect sounds defensive, not to mention confused. Huckabee is PART OF THE FISCAL and Constitutional problems, so to defend him on this basis is absurd. Moreover, this to me is not about disenchantment with the GOP - that's not exactly a new or novel concept - it's about what kind of naked political stunt this is by Huckabee, and I contend it is.

The party won’t endorse them any time soon, but a number of GOPers have no problem with them.

[the Supreme Court declared the case moot, refusing to grant cert.]

The Supreme Court never declared the ERA extension unconstitutional. It is the “not crossing the Ts and dotting the Is” that opens up differing interpretations to the ‘moot point’...

Remember the Monica Lewinsky affair and Bill Clinton’s “It depends on what the meaning of the words ‘is’ is.” during his 1998 grand jury testimony. “It depends on how you define alone.”

This time around will there be enough principled citizens who care enough to fight ERA?

Still, the seven year window closed in 1989. That's the only window that matters. Look up the 1921 case of Dillon v. Gloss for details.

If the Illinois Legislature ratifies anyway, it will send a Memorandum of Ratification to the Archivist of the United States. He will thank them and send them a letter telling them they are 25 years too late.

I hope so. But to be on the safe side, pressure should be put on the Illinois State Representatives. This is the State that ratified civil unions, homosexual marriage, medical marijuana, Common Core, legalized gambling, homosexual adoptions, and Comprehensive Sex Education in a matter of two years.

It isn't an issue the GOP can win!

This election needs to be about Obama's failed policies.

Exactly! The Democrats would love to have the GOP start talking about abortion and same-sex marriage and ignore Obama and his failed polices.

Calling Huckabee names may make you feel better about yourself but what has that got to do with the subject matter of this thread and how it affects the Republican base and the party itself?

I personally probably couldn't vote for Huckabee but that doesn't mean that we don't have some common interest in the social issues of the day that really matter and that I happen to agree with him on instead of the party of the poorly misguided as many many thousands and even millions of other social conservatives do as well. IMO the GOPe is just shooting itself in its other foot with these (extreme) liberal positions the RINOs are wanting to stake out for the GOP.

Let’s see if there’s as much tearing of hair and rending of clothing over Huckabee saying this, as when it was tossed around regarding Sarah Palin and the Tea Party.

Somehow, I suspect not. Huckabee doesn’t have the following and he doesn’t have the gift of gab with the base that she did and perhaps still does.

Which is just a reflection of the nation as a whole - at some point we have to start blaming the voters, and not just the politicians.

I blame voters who pull the lever without thinking, like most Dems

‘The Huck haters ignore the context of what was said or done and just pile on with the vitriol.”

Yes, and it makes me sick to my stomach. I FULLY agree with what he said. I am a moral/social conservative first and foremost.

Actually, I believe most “Huck haters” are actually social liberals or libertarian (libertines) or they just have anti-conservative evangelical Christian bigotry & dementia. They have gotten so vocal here in FR that I seldom come here as I used to do. BTW - I am NOT a Mike Huckabee fan....I just think on this and most social/moral issues he is correct and sincere.

“If Ted Cruz can get the nomination, form a good ticket with a sound second, the Huckster would stand a very good chance of defeating him for Hillary.......If the Huckster goes third party, it could be just as bad.”

If Cruz gets to GOP nomination then Huckabee won’t need - nor will he - to form a third party. Cruz is taking as strong a stand as Mike on social/moral issues.

And that’s fine. Huckabee has a number of views that I don’t agree with him on. Perhaps that’s a little overplayed, in that it is probably more like a few important ones.

I don’t know if disagreement with Cruz on those issues would tick him off. Perhaps not.

AMEN!

Not sure how much longer I can say that here at FR. This place is going LEFTIST and anti-Christian at an alarming rate.

Besides the hatred for Christianity and pro-moral values in politics, I am disgusted at the PRO-DOPE agenda ongoing here.

http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3213719/posts

FR allows retread newbie trolls (Soros paid operatives) to disrupt and agitate on a regular and routine basis.

As far as I’m concerned, this has a direct impact on why the FReepathons go on and on and on.

IMO the libertarians are ruining FR.

If you voted for Ronald Reagan, that was a decent choice. But Republicans after Reagan went soft. Still used to be better than voting Democrat, but not now. Except for a few, Republicans are the same as Democrats, only it’s not so obvious until they are elected.

It took a while for me to realize that a Republican is not necessarily a conservative. And that’s what I’m looking for — a conservative. I refuse to vote for another liberal, Democrat or Republican. If the party hand picks another weenie like Romney or McCain, I will write in a conservative, most likely Ted Cruz. I’m not going to settle.

I hope you are right. But in a close election the Huck could pull in a couple of million votes.

Rand Paul: Time for GOP to soften war stance
...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said.
