SEATTLE -- The Seattle City Council is scheduled to vote Monday on a resolution to change the name of Columbus to "Indigenous People's Day."

"It's really irritating to me, because of what Columbus stands for. He represents what many of our Native Americans believe when the genocide started," says Millie Kennedy, who identifies herself as a member of the Raven Clan in the Tsimshian tribe.

However, not all people feel the same way, including Seattleites who share Italian heritage with Christopher Columbus. "It's become a symbol of honoring Italian Americans and the legacy that our parents and grandparents left us with," counters Lisa Marchese, who sits on the board of the local chapter of the Italian American Chamber of Commerce. She will ask the Council on Monday

Isn’t Seattle named after an Indian chief? They really have to change the name of the city.

There was a report on the news last night that Columbus killed millions of native Americans.

Millions?

Doubtful - but the Seattle city council apparently bought the BS....

They should be forced to live for a month as if Columbus and YT never stepped foot in their state.

There was a war and the Europeans won. We defeated the Indians and took their land. This same thing has been happening since humanity arrived. Previously, the various Indian tribes had been warring against each other and taking land from each other. It's no different.

IMHO, God assisted the Europeans to take land from the pagan Indians in order to build America, a nation that He has blessed. The Indians prefer the spirit of the wind, the spirit of the tree, etc. Of course, these were people who had not invented the wheel.

Meh - it never made sense to me to celebrate someone wrongly credited with "discovering" a land (which he "found" entirely by accident/incompetence) where people already lived that had been visited many times before by outsiders.

To put it in Seattle terms, it would be like celebrating Jimi Hendrix as the one who discovered the electric guitar.

I’m as indigenous as any of them. I was born here. Archaeologist are discovering American Indians came from Asia, Europe Polynesia over multiple periods. My family just came in a later period.

If these PC idiots are so deeply ashamed of the result of Columbus and his voyages to the “New World”, it seems rather odd that they happily enjoy the fruits of those voyages.
After all, these “Good People (/s)” are, under the laws of the United States, perfectly free to get the hell out of here and find a new home in a land uncontaminated by the results of European exploration.
Good bye and sort of good luck.

Attacked, butchered, enslaved, sometimes ate, but hey don't let the truth get in the way of some great European Caucasian bashing and demonization.

I visited a Tribal Area in a prosperous reservation town on the Olympic Peninsula.

There was a very nice tribal high school there. It had signs strongly advertising their team names....... The Red Devils

Then there is the controversy with the team name in DC
