Woman saves three relatives from Ebola

(CNN) -- It can be exhausting nursing a child through a nasty bout with the flu, so imagine how 22-year-old Fatu Kekula felt nursing her entire family through Ebola.

Her father. Her mother. Her sister. Her cousin. Fatu took care of them all, single-handedly feeding them, cleaning them and giving them medications.

And she did so with remarkable success. Three out of her four patients survived. That's a 25% death rate -- considerably better than the estimated Ebola death rate of 70%.

Fatu stayed healthy, which is noteworthy considering that more than 300 health care workers have become infected with Ebola, and she didn't even have personal protection equipment -- those white space suits and goggles used in Ebola treatment units.

Instead Fatu, who's in her final year of nursing school, invented her own equipment. International aid workers heard about Fatu's "trash bag method" and are now teaching it to other West Africans who can't get into hospitals and don't have protective gear of their own.

This young lady had more than ordinary resources for a Liberian - she is a final year nursing student; she had a car, gloves, mask, IV medications, and enough garbage bags. A great accomplishment of love, courage and skill.

Hey mods, did you know the "anthrax scare" is still a Hot Topic on the posting page? I'm glad FR isn't buffeted by prevailing fears and the doom du jour.

Great story, I wonder if an American could self treat.

I wonder, did she reuse the trash bags or did she just have an inexhaustible supply?

And a lot of prayer:

“’I cried many times,’ she said. ‘I said ‘God, you want to tell me I’m going to lose my entire family?’’”
“’I’m very, very proud,’ her father said. ‘She saved my life through the almighty God.’”

I wish they had told us what medicines she used. It just says she obtained them from a local clinic.

A significant majority of those now living probably owe their physical existence to great women of faith like Fatu Kekula. They kept their families, and their bloodlines, alive.

Good job. She conceived and implemented an effective, dirt-cheap infectious disease protocol.

Dear Obama Administration,

Please don't select a blue-ribbon panel to start a prolonged official investigation into optimal methods of procuring garbage bags for African distribution. It will not be necessary to verify that the management ranks of corporations involved in bag production show an acceptable diversity of race, sex, and sexual orientation. Nor will it be necessary to verify that production processes used in fabricating bags meet the applicable environmental regulations, or to verify that bag production facilities are in compliance with the applicable workplace safety regulations. Also, it will not be necessary to involve the United Nations in any way.

Just send them the damn bags.

Yes - it would be nice to know the medicines.

I was looking at IV drips. Found home made recipes on the web (salt, sugar(honey) and distilled water). Nothing about homemade IV devices. Re-hydrating with an enema might be the way to go. (I recall a story where a guy kept his family alive on an island that way using enemas from brackish water.)

Uh, the sample size for that bit of statistics magic was...4 (four)! But I guess this wouldn't mean anything to anyone over at CNN.
