The IRS failed to take all required steps for collecting unpaid taxes from people it cant locate in over half the cases that investigators studied, potentially costing the government a pile of lost revenue, according to a federal report released Monday.
The study does not estimate exactly how much money the IRS might collect if its workers were conducting all the research they are supposed to perform to find the taxpayers.
The investigators wrote that in 2012, the IRS declared $6.7 billion in unpaid taxes to be uncollectableinvolving nearly 483,000 tax returnsbecause it couldnt find the taxpayers. Of that total, the investigators estimated that $1.9 billion was in returns on which agency workers failed to conduct all the required probing to find the people who owed the money.

They were too busy harassing political opposition.
Give the IRS some T.P. for their bungle.
I thought that The Great Cornholio was in the White House.
Which also means they will go after the “easy” targets like you and I over the smallest of indiscretions for four reasons: 1) we’re easy to find because we’re not hiding from anyone, 2) we pay our bills, 3) we actually use our real social security numbers, and 4) our cases are much less difficult to investigate and close; no multiple identities or shell companies to hide behind; basically no elements of fraud (which means they will require a lot more work.
Shockingly, 72% of those are IRS employees.
They were too busy “scratching” their harddrives and blackberries.
I can’t possibly be the only one who has nothing but utter, total, complete, 100% contempt for the IRS.
I had a small business that went bust. The IRS sure was good at hounding me!
I almost thought this was going to be something else from the band Mr. Bungle ... not *the* Mr. Bungle :-).
The bigger the government organization, the greater the corruption and incompetence.
It’s long past time for a flat tax.
Graduated or flat - the income tax has to go.
Consumption tax is the way to go. Just like the founders said.
“They were too busy harassing political opposition.”..
They didn’t have any problem harassing our little 501(c)3 local charity. They have been hounding us for information about our having shown a loss of $4000. For almost a year, the issue still has not been resolved. IMO, “Affirmative Action” has been playing a very large part in why this issue still persists. Our records have shown why the loss several times and they still cannot understand it. Unless its written in their play book, they cannot (or choose not to) comprehend. Personally, I would do a MAJOR overhaul of that dept. should I have the chance.
Start with IRS employees, movie stars, Real Housewives & their husbands, rappers, etc.
Plus, the 2 or 3 people who are actual "tax analysts" are apparently down in the basement burning documents, shredding hard drives & smashing Blackberry phones...
Start with charlie rangel and all fed employees, they will find plenty in just those 2 places.
Man, did you see the size of that cake they got? It would make Michelle Obama’s head explode.
