The CEO of a $2 trillion investment fund said he made the decision to resign from his post after his young daughter wrote him a note listing 22 milestones he had missed in her life.

California-based Mohamed El-Erian left his job as chief executive of PIMCO in mid-March. The 56-year-old El-Erian, who made $100 million in 2011 alone, chose to leave his post after his 10-year-old daughter wrote about all the special moments he was absent for in her life.

I could have done it too. I could have quit to stay home with my family. Eventually we would have been bankrupt.

Exactly. There always needs to be balance in life, but I never like the automatic assumption that a father needs to be at all his kids' soccer games and dance recitals and school events. When I was younger, my parents came to events perhaps two or three times a year and I didn't feel abandoned or cry about it. I knew my father and mother were working and would be there when they could. And if they were working during my birthday, we had a birthday dinner on the weekend when they were available. Parents today put way too much emphasis on going to these events or having to "be there" for the kids. Kids need to learn that being successful involves trade-offs and may mean that mom or dad is going to miss events.

I agree with you. That’s how it was for me growing up too.

Although in this guy’s case, he probably has plenty of money stashed away. Most people don’t have that luxury.

The daughter of a Islam (judging by his name) asked her dad to quit?

I wonder how many of those milestones she would have had if he had not been making so much money.

I think he's FoS.

It's well known there was huge drama between him and (founder) Bill Gross and El-Erian left at the height of it.

Now that Gross is gone, it's rumored that El-Erian might return to do things his way.

And when the daughter is 14 and wears tight jeans the father will cut her head off.
