Greg Orman, a political enigma, faces growing scrutiny in Kansas Senate race
The Washington Post ^ | September 28, 2014 | Phillip Rucker

Greg Orman, the upstart Senate candidate threatening to unseat longtime Republican incumbent Pat Roberts in Kansas, says it’s liberating to run as an independent: “I can go to Washington as a problem solver, not a partisan.”

But not having a party also liberates Orman from taking positions — especially on controversial issues that might alienate partisans.

Greenlight the Keystone XL pipeline? Orman said he doesn’t have enough information to say yes or no.

What about gun control? He said gun restrictions should be “strengthened” but would not specify whether he backs an assault-weapons ban.

And on the biggest question of all — Would he caucus with Democrats or Republicans? — Orman insists he’s not sure.

“It’s not in the best interests for us to say that,” Orman said in an interview here last week.

Orman has said he would caucus with whichever party has the majority after November’s midterm elections. But what if the Senate is evenly divided and Orman’s decision swings the balance? He said that would be “a wonderful opportunity for Kansas.”

Orman’s rise has transformed deep-red Kansas into the year’s unlikeliest political battleground. Many voters say Roberts has lost touch with the state he’s represented in Congress since 1981.

Since Democratic nominee Chad Taylor withdrew his name from the ballot this month, Roberts has been in a two-man race with Orman, who has previous ties to the Democratic Party but preaches independence. Public polling has been unreliable, but both sides believe the race is very tight.

Orman, who entered the race in June, has surged on the strength of his pitch to fix a broken Washington without any allegiance to a political party. But now the enigma is under increasing pressure from voters to provide a clearer sense of his ideology and politics...

Orman can only win if he hides is political philosophy, his clear associations with Democrats, his support for Obama, his shady business dealings, and his lack of integrity. The weekend football games and Royals ride to the postseason all featured ads against Orman, the first to take a shot at him. Very few people in Kansas read the Washington Post, but they didn't do him any favors either.

The last I heard there was still a pending court case on whether the Democrats should have to comply with the law requiring that they name a substitute candidate. What happened with that?

Silly rabbit, election laws are for Republicans to follow, not democrats.

I really hope the campaign advisors for Roberts are using Orman’s comments in those TV ads you spoke about.

Orman sounds like an out and out lefty who’s trying really hard to conceal those leanings.

You almost don’t need to nail him over his Dem connections. You could hit him really hard over his lack of sincerity or ability to articulate exactly what he stands for.

I would expect the RNC to dump every spare penny in this race to protect one their own.

That case was heard by the the Sebelius packed Kansas Supreme Court. They ruled that it just wasn’t fair that Taylor had to keep his name on the ballot just because of some silly law. Those who voted for him in the primary should just get over it and vote for Orman, that who the Democrat leadership really wants anyway, voters need to do as they are told. They put it in very proper legal language, of course, but that’s what they really thought.

If he can't even come out with a position on Keystone then he is useless as a legislator.

Greenlight the Keystone XL pipeline?

What about gun control?
He said gun restrictions should be “strengthened” but would not specify whether he backs an assault-weapons ban.

And on the biggest question of all — Would he caucus with Democrats or Republicans?
Orman insists he’s not sure.

Are the people of Kansas really so stupid that they can't see through this phony?

He doesn't have enough information to decide on the Keystone pipeline? And he wants to be a U.S. Senator? Give me a (expletive deleted) break. He is simply lying about it and all the other key issues of his campaign. Why? Because he is a Democrat and has to lie. It both suits his purpose and is, as we all well know, actually genetic.

When asked by the pollster, the voter should reply, “Hmmm, not sure.”

He needs a new tagline:

Orman - a representative of nothing for nobody!

Orman - uncertain leadership for uncertain times!

Orman - he’ll vote ‘present’ for you!

I highly doubt he’ll caucus with the republicans if he wins and they take the senate anyway.

The big difference between the left and the right—the left is afraid that people will find out what they believe, and the right is afraid people won’t.

Well if he is not going to define himself, then why does'nt Pat Roberts define himself for him by running attack ads?

I just got back from Kansas, and did not see a whole bunch of ads. Roberts appears to be running a sad, mealy mouthed campaign.

OTOH, Ed Gillespie of VA just started running attack ads, tying his opponent to Obama; expect him to pick up points on Warner.
