Microsoft Exec: Windows 9 to be Free for Windows 8 Users

Microsoft has scheduled a special invite-only event for Tuesday, September 30, 2014, where it is widely expected to introduce the next version of its popular desktop operating system (codenamed “Threshold” but popularly referred to as Windows 9)...

According to Indonesian news portal Detik, existing Windows 8 users will be able to upgrade to Microsoft’s next operating system absolutely free of cost. And how exactly do they know this, you ask? Well, Microsoft Indonesia president Andreas Diantoro said so in Jakarta Thursday...

Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell isn’t bad. I’m told it has some behind the scenes improvements, but none that I notice. My Windows 7 laptop was dying (I suspect the hard drive is going bad) so I switched over to a cheap Windows 8 laptop and did the downloads to get it to 8.1 and then tweaked it and finally got something that seems like Windows 7 to me.

If they make Windows 9 free, then I’ll consider it an apology by MS for screwing up Windows 8.

I rebuilt my old desktop and went from Windows XP to Windows 7. I really like Windows 7 and have had no issues. However, I have helped friends with their Windows 8 laptops and am always frustrated. Moving to 8.1 helps, but the best addition is some third party software that adds a start button. With that I can easily get to the control panel and home screen. I can only hope that MS goes back to a traditional windows interface and dumps the cutesy touch screen which doesn’t intuitively work like Apple or even Android tablets.

> So Windows 9 is Windows 8 that works?

I'm hoping so. Under the hood, Win 8 was an improvement over Win 7 in terms of speed and a few other things, but the user interface was horribly screwed up.

If Win 9 takes the GOOD things about Win8 and combines them with a user interface like Win 7, I'll be interested.

At present I've got around half a dozen Win 7 systems that I'm very happy with, but at some point they'll get old and cranky like all Windows tend to do, and I'll look to upgrade.

My money is on the "advanced data mining". Our privacy is already screwed, and Win 8 taught us about inconvenience.... :)

I have Windows 8. I hate Windows 8.
++++
I would be interested in hearing about your issues with 8.1. I just added a new solid state c:\ drive and installed 8.1 on a 5 year old Core i7 machine and I’m quite happy with it. I dont even miss the old Start menu and I have perhaps 5 or 6 shortcuts on my desktop compared with about 50 before when I was running Vista. Lightning fast boot up. Lightning fast execution. Seems fine to me.

If they are going to provide it for “free”, then
their marketing group has determined that no one wants to buy it.

"Free for Windows 8 Users"

Free? MS will have to pay me to use their next POS OS.

i still have Windows 7 and would likely still have the one before that if that computer had not crashed. Do not like the new one which my dad has and he doesn’t like it either.

As long as the Charms Bar comes up nearly every time I scroll a web page!

Boy, I’d hate if they took that ‘feature’ away.

I’ll stick with Windows 7 for another 8 years or so.

I finally (grudgingly) moved my home computers from XP to Win 7 earlier this year. Win 7 works fine for me now and I'll probably stick with it up until MS stops supporting it, just like I did with XP.

Don’t they end support for Windows 7 in January?

Kind of interesting reading the posts on Windows 8 and 9. Seems that there will always be folks going for the latest version which Microsoft counts on so there is that...

Windows 7 is the last and best working system lately. Of course, Version 8 might be better for portable systems so I will give it that. Otherwise, why in the work would you upgrade?

Not going to go into the pros and cons as they sometimes are user specific but really folks, don’t upgrade just for the latest version. Enough said...

If you were being sarcastic, this is how you disable it.

Good lord I hope not. But maybe we should define "support"...
