University Axes Art Class After Too Many Perverts Call About Appearances Of Nude Models

Due to numerous lewd calls from artists and Oregon residents about stark naked art models at the University of Oregon, the college decided to nix a figure drawing class to protect the models from a slew of seemingly pervy artisans.

Known as the Saturday Figure Drawing Group, the free class offered to local artists and residents would meet once a week to workshop drawings of live nude models. But after a few weeks of potential students calling the school asking apparently bawdy questions about the models, the university canceled the classes, according to an official university letter forwarded to The Daily Caller.

Can't....stop....laughing. If the pervs want nude models to look at/draw, all they have to do is go downtown to Portland or take a drive down to the bay area. No doubt plenty of volunteers. I didn't see any gender mentioned. Or cross/trans gender either. That could bring a whole new round of comments.

Reminds me of that girly bar in Boise about 5 years ago having “art night”. Was able to circumvent the anti nudity laws by handing customers a scetch pad when they walk in the door for art night.

About sixty years ago a friend of mine at UWis.-Madison was taking an art course wherein a nude model was one of the objects employed. So, what’s the big deal?

Seriously, who needs to go to class for a nakid woman. Just show up to any party and it’s a free buffet, and that was some 25 years ago.

Nothing pornographic about painting a beautiful nude woman.

You just have a lot of perverts out there who can’t appreciate art.

But that’s their loss.

Remember the art class scene in “Eighteen Again” with George Burns?

His 81 year old soul inhabits an 18 year old kid; when the model steps onto the platform & doffs her robe, he reacts uh, effusively. The obviously gay instructor confronts him & he replies, “Do you know when I last saw a naked lady!!?”

Then GB’s thought voice says, “Actually, it was last Thursday. But it still gets to me.”

When I was going through the diploma factory, only the higher-level drawing classes had nude models, the lower-level classes usually resorting to a student posing in some sort of dance wear. If nothing else, that weeded out most of the dilettantes and a good number of the merely curious. About all I can say is that it was one of those things that sounded vastly more entertaining to a young single guy than it actually was.

One of my professors - who did not see much value in nude models - once told me about how his own instructors used to pay people from the skid row part of town to be nude models… apparently to keep down libidos AND give students something more challenging to delineate. He was a gifted raconteur with a lot of good stories that ranged from his WWII service (8th AF) to the world of art museums, and some of what he said about human nature has proven valuable to me to this day.

As someone who took such classes as an art major, I can assure you they are not recruiting their models from the Playboy agency.

I took art classes at the University of Washington 40 years or so ago. We had a nude model sometimes. No one was lewd about it but a few made quiet comments about her being chubby. But in the college years back then everyone was very critical of themselves and others.

Actually, back then the university being half funded by taxpayers would not admit anyone with very serious weight problems believing it was not a good investment health wise. So students were generally pretty fit and could get snide about those who were not

Of course, now all kinds of diverse bodies and intellects are admitted.

Not free. Tax payer funded.

Thinking outside the box, not, they could draw clothed models or bowls of fruit if the class was truly about mastering drawing.

Life drawing is fundamental to art training and is the most difficult aspect of realistic illustration. The clothed figure is no substitute. A mature society can handle it, but in today’s environment I guess it’s too much to ask.

Artists have been drawing, sculpting, and painting nude models of both sexes for millennia. How otherwise do you suggest art students learn how to accurately represent the endless complexities of human musculature, skeletal frame, skin color and texture, movement, and attitude? There is no substitute. Photos won't do it.

Presumably art students at a university are adults. There is no sexual component to the models' poses. It's pretty clinical.
