No, Washington was “No Party”, not a Federalist. John and J.Q. Adams was the only Federalist president.
BFD. Polls have shown that for decades. But what does each side do EVERY time? They line up and vote for “their” Party because they have been scared to do so. “Oh no a vote for a Third Party is a vote for [other side] and we can’t have that!”
We’re never, ever going to have a viable Third party n America. Ever.
Correction: JQA was “National Republican”, not Federalist.
You are insightful but one thing Reagan Democrats are conservative. They want to conserve the American economy with jobs here and not exported and stay the hell out of wars. So called GOP conservatives want free trade and war. I'm a Reagan Democrat, including pro-life. We need a party for America first not any kind of new world order.
blue tribe vs red tribe and we’re not on their island.
What you are describing here are 'economic' conservatives, who are not conservative at all. These types are whats wrong with the GOP today.
But I think the 'conservatives' on this site are big on free trade and war. Outside of this site, conservatives want to move away from social issues. Regards fellow 98er.
Ding-ding-ding!!! We have a winner!
Unlike the Republicans the Democrats are not slow suicide. To get a second party to oppose the disease that is liberalism the Republican party has to die off and die off quickly, it can’t be a 10 yr. process for the country to survive.
It was a great year...
“The way the electoral college works, there is a strong built in bias to have only 2 major political parties. At least in presidential politics.”
The individual states cast their electoral votes, as they choose, according to laws and practices at the states’ level.
Maine and Nebraska split electoral votes, according to proportions.
If democrat and republican candidates both got 45% of the votes in a state, and libertarian got 6% of the votes, the libertarian would wield a lot of power.
The libertarian says he’ll direct his electors to vote for the republican (or democrat) for example.
More like European countries, in my example.
In the US we have had all-or-nothing electoral votes for most states. But that could change.
Maine and Nebraska allocate electoral votes by congressional district if I recall correctly. I’m.not sure how or why the other 48 states set it up to be winner take all in electoral.votes. But states are free to change how they apportion electoral votes if they chose to do so. My guess is that both parties prefer winner take all.
It only took the Republicans about 6 years to win the presidency in 1860 with Lincoln once they left the Whigs.
Yes, much different now than back then.
“Well except maybe they know about the Kardashians, and MTV awards..and video games.”
100% right. Sad.
Yeah, I’m so sick of hearing political retards ask for a third party, not happening in our electoral system. Wanna switch to proportional representation like some Euro countries? Ask Italy how that worked out for them.
WO reading the comments BTW I bet more than 1 person said “we need a second party”.
Pizza, pasta e vino sempre!!!
