Why Would Anyone Want Mitt Romney to Run for President in 2016?
reason.com ^ | 9/25/14 | Peter Suderman

Today in oh-fer-cryin-out-loud: In an article titled "Romney 2016 is for real," The Washington Examiner’s Byron York looks at the movement to keep Mitt Romney—yes, that Mitt Romney, the oddly robotic candidate who looks like Mr. Fantastic, the wealthy former consultant who casually makes $10,000 bets with his opponents, the policy-specifics averse former Massachusetts governor who inspired so little enthusiasm as he topped the GOP ticket and lost by three points in 2012—in the mix as a potential contender for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in 2016.

Why, you might wonder, would anyone want Romney to run again? He offered almost nothing to the ticket in 2012 except a bland respectability. Against the weak GOP lineup he was facing, that was enough to win the nomination. But most Republican voters never really loved the guy, and he never really seemed particularly fond of Republican voters or conservative policies (remember, this is the guy who as Massachusetts governor signed into law the model for Obamacare, hoping that the rest of the nation would follow).

His domestic policy agenda, in particular, was intentionally kept vague and largely substance free; he wasn’t running on what he would do so much as what he wouldn’t be—Obama. There was almost no positive case to vote for Romney, and he and his team barely attempted to present one. Another nod for Romney would only serve to further cement the already pervasive notion that the Republican party is an agenda-free-zone when it comes to policy.

Romney was nominated because he seemed more electable than the rest of the field. Relatively speaking, that impression may have been right, but it’s hard to run on electability after having soundly lost a major national election.

He’s creepy but in his defense he has run something before, is a hell of a businessman and is self made. The Mormon part is almost inexcusable however.

The Mitt even wants to run and that the GOP considers it, is proof positive of JUST how out of touch THEY are!

Q. “Why, you might wonder, would anyone want Romney to run again?”

A. Because they want the Democrats to win.

I don’t think it’s so much that as they simply aren’t risk-takers and don’t like to rock the boat. The GOPe isn’t really “Liberal” and saying do gives them way too much credit. They’re simply well-entrenched political opportunists who crave the stability of a go-along to get-along environment.

Sort of how organized crime doesn’t like ... crime. Or at least the sort of crime that interferes with their crime. It’s bad for business.

Unfortunately what we really need right now IS a risk-taker, and someone who WILL rock the boat. Thats not Romney, never was and never will be.

You mean that guy who folded in the debates when Benghazi came up - and couldn’t get it up to pummel obama? You mean the original implementer of obamacare in Mass? You mean Mr. Detached - a guy who is detached from the average American’s everyday life? You mean the 3RD. in a row of GOP/RNC Losers - behind McCain and Dole? You mean that guy who allowed his campaign team to bloody every Republican opponent’s nose in the Primaries but couldn’t do anything except hand a hankie to obama to wipe his nose... Yes - I know that Romney ...

Who ever dreamed up running Romney again is smoking dope.

This is an issue for one and only one reason. The conservative wing(s) of the party have not yet united behind a candidate, and -- if and when that happens -- we have yet to see if the conservative standardbearer du jour can (a) get traction with the broader public and (b) avoid self-destruction.

At the moment, Romney stands out because he's tested, vetted, capable, polished, and highly impressive personally. He would be a great Republican candidate were he a couple of shades more conservative. But he is who is is. The Romney buzz will dissipate when and if a strong conservative with outreach potential appears on the scene. If that doesn't happen by the middle of next year, Romney may have appeal as the best man standing. That's a low bar. But it remains to be seen who will clear it.

If it is down to Hillary or Mitt, are 'you' still going to sit home!

Are there better choices then Mitt for our side? Yes, but when it comes down to the final vote, what will we do?

Romney comes from a very wealthy family. His business was a vulture investment business, which was really based on aggressive buying and selling of productive businesses - not that there’s anything necessarily wrong with that, but it’s not like he was busy producing cars, say, and employing people. Saying he was a “businessman” promotes that idea, which was clearly the image he wanted to give, even though it wasn’t accurate.

The only person who wants Romney to run again is Romney, but unfortunately, he has enough money of his own to buy the slot again. I already receive about 3 emails a day from the Romney campaign, presumably based on GOP voter lists that he has bought, and this just started about a month ago. So you can see that he’s already opened his wallet.

Simple, they don’t want a conservative President.

You mean a SEVERELY conservative President, don't you?

Especially now, as our country undergoes total collapse from 100 years of the Progressive assault on our Constitution and on core American values, the reason that people "don't want a conservative president" is because the GOPe has declared war on conservatives.

The conservative argument for liberty, limited government and taxation is so compelling -- especially in light of the disastrous Obama administration now, where we can count the chickens that have come home to roost.

Romney wasn't conservative, couldn't articulate conservative principles and waged war on his conservative rivals -- notably Newt Gingrich, who was the best and most articulate conservative candidate of the pack.

Then he rolled over and failed to win an election that should have been a shoe-in against the most flawed and repellent candidate in modern history.

All he had to do was go on the attack and call Obama out for the anti-American dangerous and incompetent leftist extremist ideologue that he is.

But he didn't do that. It's not that Americans don't want a conservative president. It's that the Republican Party doesn't want one.

Romney was the most decent man to ever run for President. That does not make him a good President, but, infinitely better than the jOke we got. I would prefer someone who will not compromise with the Bolshies. Half way to Communism is the wrong direction.
