ONE of the most beautifully droll remarks from the age of terror was Bob Carr’s assessment of the unfortunate trajectory local lad David Hicks’ life took after he threw in his lot with the Taliban.
It came when Carr was foreign minister and facing an earnest grilling from sections of the press gallery about poor Hicks’ apparently illegal internment in Camp X-Ray and the five years he lost as a result. Carr was unmoved.
“If you do what David Hicks did you undertake certain risks,” Carr said.
“You put yourself in the line of fire-fighting a jihad against NATO forces, against Western forces, then your life becomes more complex.
“David Hicks did that and I think he accepts he has to live with the consequences.”
Life does indeed become more complex. Life became more complex for Numan Haider around dinner time on Wednesday. Life, in fact, came to an end.
It is probably inhumane to say that you are happy with such a result. I would be lying if I said I was upset by it. Under the circumstances it does seem like the best possible outcome, given the alternative outcome was two cops having their heads chopped off, just over the road from the Little Angels Childcare Centre in suburban Endeavour Hills.
But despite the fact that Haider had just repeatedly stabbed one officer and had started stabbing another, there are some in the community who regard him as the victim of a savage overreaction.
They’re not isolated to the rattier fringes of Australia’s Muslim communities, either, but proliferate among the hand-wringing class which wonders whether the whole thing was somehow cooked up to demonise Islam and drum up support for the terror laws.

I saw maybe one “why didn’t they shoot him in the leg or use a taser?” opinion to fifty “why didn’t they open fire sooner?” opinion in Australian political news sites.
I don’t anticipate Australians being in much of an uproar here. Muslims in Australia sure, but who cares?
Best thing to do here to smooth things over with the public is for the police to blast another one. Take my expert advice.
Because that was the name he commonly went by - it's a peculiarity of the way names work in Arabic - Abdul virtually never stands alone, but is virtually always accompanied by another more personal name - in this case Numan.

Numan Haider sounds almost German.
It’s pure Arabic though - Numan means blood or red. Haider means lion.
Servant of the Red Lion is a literal translation of Abdul Numan Haider, but I’m not sure how literally it should be taken.

Heh. Reminds me of Seinfeld. Not sure if it should be shouted, like when he comes to the door (NEWMAN!!!). Or when they figure out why something has happened (car is gone, door is locked, etc.) and they come to the conclusion “Newman...”

I only have sympathy for the victims and their families. The police were simply engaged in carrying out their duties.
Or if that is the only translation... I learned Arabic about 24 years ago now - and really only learned enough to get Arabic speakers to say "We can speak English, if you prefer?" And I don't even remember all of that :)
islam does a well enough job of demonizing itself without any help.

Haider had an ISIS flag and a much larger knife under his clothing. He and some friends had tried to lure the police to a meeting (about Haider’s involvement in terrorist on-line activity, IIRC) where they planned to kidnap them, behead them and cover them with the ISIS flag, but the police suspected that something was up and arranged a meeting in front of police headquarters. Haider then decided that his only chance to kill a policeman and go out in a blaze of glory was to attack right then.
Some “mistake.”

The FBI is now investigating the outbreak of Islamic State-like terror in the heartland because Nolen recently converted to Islam and had been trying to convert others. Citing local Corrections Department records, NewsOK reported that Nolen has tattooed on his abdomen “as-salaamu alaikum,” which is Arabic for “peace be with you.”
