Eric Holder Jr., the nation's first black U.S. attorney general, is preparing to announce his resignation Thursday after a tumultuous tenure marked by civil rights advances, national security threats, reforms to the criminal justice system and five and a half years of fights with Republicans in Congress.
Two sources familiar with the decision tell NPR that Holder, 63, intends to leave the Justice Department as soon as his successor is confirmed, a process that could run through 2014 and even into next year. A former U.S. government official says Holder has been increasingly "adamant" about his desire to leave soon for fear he otherwise could be locked in to stay for much of the rest of President Obama's second term.

Before Reid can confirm Obama's appointments, Obama has to make them.
Obama is not releasing his current list of far left wing appointments yet for the same reason he is not announcing his amnesty for illegals plan. Everyone knows it is coming, but not until after the election in November.
Obama may be a marxist P.O.S. and the worst President since Jimmy Carter, but he isn't politically stupid.

Obama will definitely want to replace Ginsburg with a hard core leftist in his, her or its early 50s to ensure that the replacement is legislating from the bench for as long as possible. A black, lesbian, transsexual would be the most likely candidate, since he/she/it would cover as many Democrat quotas as possible.
Regardless, I still think it is almost certain that Reid will push Holder's replacement through during the lame duck session (along with a whole host of other far left wing appointments).
No way for that to happen unless and until a conservative President is elected and can replace the Attorney General and all of the current U.S. Attorneys. Even then, it will take a generation to balance out all of the far left wing liberal judges that Obama has appointed.

Was just speculating that they might want to ensure his unopposed appointment before january. Would be no questions, no debate.
Who knows, it may give holder immunity from prosecution (separation of powers).
I’m sure he’ll be getting a nice retirement package courtesy of the people he screwed over.
