Hello, Ken. I’m not on the scene...I live about 70 miles south of Charlottesville. I’ve just been paying attention to the local coverage.

I haven’t seen any claims that she walked up and embraced him. He was seen on video following her; another video shows him with his arm around her/hands around her waist (I’ve seen both claims), walking into a restaurant together.

You’re right, no one seems bothered about the fact that he left the station with his lawyer. I don’t know what the Charlottesville police are doing.

Exactly. There are those who always rush to, “but she didn't ask for it!” Sorry, but yes she did. Anyone who purposefully goes out scantily clad is asking for sexual attention. Any girl who's out getting drunk on her own is asking for attention and whatever comes with it. No, they don't deserve being beaten, raped and murdered for making stupid decisions but 99% know full well they shouldn't put themselves in those positions. Sadly, too many times they do and it's too late for them.

That’s why I don’t care about visiting Charlottesville. I’ve been through it, and that’s enough. It’s way too liberal for me. The aspect you—and Tucker Carlson—describe reminds me of the homeless in San Francisco. Don’t dare offend one of those poor souls...let them have the run of the streets while accosting decent citizens.

It would appear that Charlottesville has a lot of trouble.
At least they have one conviction:

Randy Taylor to serve two life sentences for the murder of Alexis Murphy

” Decide now to run if you can, get noisy and get violent if you can’t. Take your chances at that spot, not in the place he wants to take you, and pray that God will protect and assist you.”

I remember telling my daughters,”NEVER GET IN THE CAR”.

Good advice.

"I knew a recent UVA grad who wore too much clothing if that’s possible because she was self-conscious about her body.

But she walked around as if she had a “kick me” sign on her back. Even her younger siblings [one boy, one girl] picked on her because of the way she carried herself."

I'm not suggesting that girls go from one extreme of dressing to the other. I'm not proposing that they wear turtlenecks and skirts down to the ground. There's a huge expanse of stylish, sharp clothing in between wearing bra tops and dresssing like a Mormon.

"Attitude, situational awareness — and not putting yourself in vulnerable positions in the first place are highly important."

I agree.

"Just as it’s not possible to have ‘safe sex’ with someone who is HIV+, it is not possible for a young woman to safely go out drinking and walk around alone. Gun or no gun. Martial arts training or no. No matter what she’s wearing."

If you think a lot of exposed flesh doesn't signal a male predator, you just aren't being realistic. Sorry.

That DON’T warning should be for men also. My husband’s college roommate vanished into thin air when he took a trip via hitch hiking to a nearby state, about a four or so hour drive away. We stayed in touch with his parents from time to time for many years after his disappearance. Their anguish was indescribable. It is still heartbreaking to remember it all. For so long, I would look into the faces of strangers at large events, hoping and praying we would one day come across Mike again. To my knowledge, his body has never been found, but his dental records are on file with the authorities.

I’m saying that being covered up isn’t enough to dissuade a predator. They look for weakness and lack of awareness first.

That being said, women and girls who go out showing off how much of a piece of @ss they are should understand that they are doing so for all ages and all types — including those whom they might not want paying attention to them.

“Blame-the-victim” is one of those loaded phrases intended to shut down debate by closing off a legitimate line of discussion.

Of course, the person who commits a robbery, mugging, rape, abduction, murder, et. al., is 100%, totally, and completely at fault for his (or her) actions.

That said, in many cases, the victim has placed himself or herself at an unnecessary and unacceptably high risk through his or her choice of actions. These actions do not decrease the culpability of the perpetrator, but they did put the victim in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and in the wrong circumstances so that they were the criminal’s chosen target.

In a perfect world, no one would have to worry about where they went, with whom, and what they did while there or on the way. But the world isn’t perfect and never will be. There will always be some who disregard social customs and laws, and to disregard all common sense in maintaining a fiction that human beings are all angels is massively unwise.

So, in the case in question, whether or not “she was asking for it” is totally irrelevant with respects to finding and punishing the person or persons who (likely) have done her harm. But it is totally appropriate to point out the needless and reckless risks she took that put her in the position of being a victim, and to use that to educate others to avoid those risks.

Nor did I imply that is the case.

Randy Taylor is a piece of garbage that walks like a man. He refuses to reveal the whereabouts of Alexis Murphy's body so that her family could at least have the solace of laying her to rest. The coward tried to run from the courtroom when the girl's mother got up to speak.

I don't know, Virginia jurors don't seem to have much of a stomach for the death penalty these days. Taylor says a lot of his fellow prisoners have it in for him, and he fears being attacked (never mind what Alexis Murphy suffered when HE attacked HER).

I can only hope he'll get the ultimate justice while he's behind bars.

Well...anywhere in the outskirts of here, except Crozet...these “citizens” would likely have to dodge high velocity flying objects. My theory is they come here from Richmond or DC after they get rolled out of there. Sad that the local government doesn’t care but “liberal” is just a soft term for “stupid”.

It is better to offend a young woman by telling her these things — and setting boundaries when she’s a minor — than to leave her vulnerable in her ignorance...

Better pi$$ed off than dead in an alley.

My daughter(and later my son) went to college in a rural part of Maine. The campus was bucolic and pretty isolated. In her sophomore year she lived in a coed dorm with guys on one floor ,girls on another. Some of my friends were horrified that the guys were in such close proximity. Me, I was perfectly happy with that setup. Why? I felt comfortable knowing that there were a bunch of hulking football players a shout away. A few years later a young woman was snatched from campus in broad daylight and murdered.
Twenty years later these kids are now parents and the best of friends.

Is there any university town that isn't?

I’m not negating anything the author says......I happen to agree with him.

But then we have the monster who terriorized the University of Florida campus......showing up in campus apartments and decapitating girls......and of course, there was Ted Bundy at Florida State who bludgeoned girls inside sorority houses.

predators are predators.......they will find a way.....

Having said that ......a young, inexperienced, inappropriately dressed, drunk girl is easy prey for predators.....or so it would seem.

Actually, I agree with you on that, although in my younger days I twice tried to hitchhick (to no avail) and at least once picked a hitchhiker up.

The book seemed to think it was OK for males, though by the time I read it, I had grown a brain cell and disagreed.

I am sorry to hear about your friend. May God be with all his loved ones.

This one isn't. But then again, the school is Liberty University.
