MOSCOW — Russia’s Parliament passed a preliminary bill on Tuesday that would limit foreign ownership of Russian media outlets to 20 percent, targeting several prominent publications critical of the government and extending the Kremlin’s control over the nation’s independent news media.

The country’s top business daily, Vedomosti, the Russian edition of Forbes and dozens of other news, society and fashion magazines would fall under the purview of the bill, which would force the publications to change ownership or close by 2017.

How much of our media is partially owned by the Saudis these days?

I hear that it results in news items being dropped and films/tv scripts being shelved.

The difference being, that they do so voluntarily. Russians don’t understand that concept.

....”How much of our media is partially owned by the Saudis these days?”.....

Exactly and why I go outside our country to get a broader, and oftentimes clearer picture of what’s happening on the world stage.

Putin’s absolutely a nationlist, among other things, he will ‘control’ what his hands can to prevent another “takeover” of the Russian media ‘by outsiders’ as was done before when the Oligarchs and others took them over.

Everyone today understands whoever controls the media of a country will indeed control the perceptions of it’s own people...as well as how the politics and it’s representatives are seen and heard...and who.

Putin’s just doing what he’s always done...not give a rats butt if the rest of the world likes it or not when it comes to his country. That’s his game and he’ll play it at will....and there isn’t much push back from the people. They’re willing to tolerate what they might not like to keep him in power.....for now.

As the American experiment with personal freedom has failed I must applaud comrade Putin’s seizing of these sweeping new powers.

As long as you don't go to the Russian media, you're fine.

Only if you think that tapwater and urine both not being 100% pure water are equally tasty.

They’re taking over our think tanks with just a few million. Now any think tank will say what America’s enemies want.

We need an immediate return to free markets in the US and small government.

Russians prefer to be slaves than to be freemen. Some Americans, Right and Left, have moved in the same direction. They prefer statism, collectivism, and autocracy, as long as it fits their values. These types of Americans believe a difference of opinion or outlook is a sign of treason, stupidity, or malice. Good common sense about civic differences is rare today. The support for Putin is symbolic of the belief that autocracy in support of “good” values is okay to those who no longer cherish freedom to disagree.

The new federal law is intended to provide for Russian ownership of media companies.

Canada has a similar law to protect Canadian media ownership for decades.

Its not an infringement of freedom of speech.
