It's about time someone finally stands up to these atheist bullies.

Good - a reason to like Tennessee ;)

You know, if the shoe were on the other foot, the libs would go after the individuals personally who were representing the organization.

They’d hire PIs, look into tax records of everyone involved [moms, dads, children, etc] to destroy any individual who stood up to them.

That’s what’s happening in the gay thing and soon the prayer thing.

My bet is the so called Knoxville News Sentinel Editorial Board will be penning editorials against prayer and pressuring the university president and Cheek to do things their liberal {Denver} way. Knoxville and counties surrounding it are Conservative. The main place you'll find hard core liberals is on campus and likely tenured.

Knox County U.S. Congressman is John {Jimmy} Duncan Jr just about the most Conservative member of congress. Despite the area as a whole being Conservative the paper is Liberal managed. The editor is from the Denver area. Knoxville City does have a DEM Mayor and I have yet to see Knoxville News Sentinel write one harsh word against her policies or administration. GOP Office Holder are another matter. State Rep Brooks will likely get "Dog taken into courthouse" type stories and worse done on him.

Chancellor Cheek is right and I support his position on this. Considering some in the not too distant past events done at UT Frat Houses it is a very welcomed position. I notice Ms Gaylor takes no position on Butt Chugging LOL.

Personally I'd like to see someone like former Editor Frank Cagle back running the paper. Better yet a return to a two daily paper competition to keep things on a more even keel as it was in the past.

“When you’re not religious or are of another faith and you get prayed at during events, it’s really very grating.”

When jackasses like you prate on about nothing it’s kinda’ grating as well.

Oh, BS. Maybe 'the offended' should stay at home under their bed rather than risk being exposed to prayer in a public arena. The whining from 'the offended' is really wearing thin.

Something tells me the namesake of Neyland Stadium {General Neyland} if he were alive would have plenty to say as well on the matter. I seem to remember seeing a “CROSS” on his grave marker when I worked mowing grass at the Knoxville National Cemetery. Just checked to make certain. Yeap sure is http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=11350046&PIpi=2667168

I told everybody a few days ago that Tennessee residents will NOT stand down to these God haters. We have had prayer before ball games and all other types of public events for my entire memory.

Even if the Feds get involved and put more pressure on, Tennesseans will find a way around them.

“........the pre-game prayers are protected by the U.S. Constitution and will not be silenced on his campus.

“The university will continue to allow prayers before university events,” .........

GO UT. Finally someone willing to stand up for their constitutional rights.

(I took a graduate course at UT, was a great place to go to school).

This happened in the TN town where we live in 2000:

This is a statement that was read over the PA system at the football game at Roane County High School, Kingston, Tennessee, by school Principal, Jody McLeod.

“It has always been the custom at Roane County High School football games, to say a prayer and play the National Anthem, to honor God and Country.”

Due to a recent ruling by the Supreme Court, I am told that saying a prayer is a violation of Federal Case Law. As I understand the law at this time, I can use this public facility to approve of sexual perversion and call it “an alternate life style,” and if someone is offended, that’s OK.

I can use it to condone sexual promiscuity, by dispensing condoms and calling it, “safe sex.” If someone is offended, that’s OK.

I can even use this public facility to present the merits of killing an unborn baby as a “viable! means of birth control.” If someone is offended, no problem…

I can designate a school day as “Earth Day” and involve students in activities to worship religiously and praise the goddess “Mother Earth” and call it “ecology.”

I can use literature, videos and presentations in the classroom that depicts people with strong, traditional Christian convictions as “simple minded” and “ignorant” and call it “enlightenment.”

However, if anyone uses this facility to honor GOD and to ask Him to Bless this event with safety and good sportsmanship, then Federal Case Law is violated.

This appears to be inconsistent at best, and at worst, diabolical.

Apparently, we are to be tolerant of everything and anyone, except GOD and His Commandments.

Nevertheless, as a school principal, I frequently ask staff and students to abide by rules with which they do not necessarily agree. For me to do otherwise would be inconsistent at best, and at worst, hypocritical… I suffer from that affliction enough unintentionally. I certainly do not need to add an intentional transgression.

For this reason, I shall ‘Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s,’ and refrain from praying at this time.

However, if you feel inspired to honor, praise and thank GOD and ask Him, in the name of Jesus, to Bless this event, please feel free to do so. As far as I know, that’s not against the law… yet.”

One by one, the people in the stands bowed their heads, held hands with one another and began to pray.

They prayed in the stands.. They prayed in the team huddles. They prayed at the concession stand and they prayed in the Announcer’s Box!

The only place they didn’t pray was in the Supreme Court of the United States of America— the Seat of “Justice” in the “one nation, under GOD.”

Somehow, Kingston, Tennessee, remembered what so many have forgotten. We are given the Freedom OF Religion, not the Freedom FROM Religion. Praise GOD that His remnant remains!

Our leaders in Congress in both houses start their day off with a Chaplain or appointed clergy for that day leading a prayer. A tradition started at the request of Founding Father Ben Franklin who was among the most liberal on religion {Deist} he and Jefferson in that respect. I can’t imagine a good outcome for anyone who would have told either man prayer in a public venue even a government owned one was prohibited by law.

I’m on the other end of the county right next to yours. Norris High class of 76. Our class held a service the Sunday before graduation {voluntary attendance} and had prayer during graduation as well. Oh yea and our principal was an ordained minister as well though others always lead the prayers.

My granddaughter is attending a 2-year college now but I think she will go to UT for the last two years. I don’t care what most non-Tennesseans say about TN, this is a wonderful place to live, especially compared to some of the other states. Yes, we have our problems, but they are mostly minor when you put them up against states like California and NY or NJ, etc.

I remember that! Like I said, Tennesseans won’t be bullied. They will find a way to do the right thing.

Liberal heads would explode if they saw our local Wal-Mart sometimes during the summer. They allow a tent revival gospel singing with preaching in the parking lot. There was a sign hung over the Wal-Mart lettering that said Jesus Saves instead of Wal-Mart Saves. :-)

Every day, my choice to move to Tennessee is reaffirmed. I love this state even though I've only been here for a very short while.

What is so hard to grasp about the establishment clause? It begins with "Congress shall make no law..." Last time I checked, the University of Tennessee is not Congress and praying is not a law. This is what happens when you eject logic and insert emotion into the law.

There was a recent thread of some high school banning a traditional game prayer, and the student body and audience did it anyway.

Standing up to the 1 or 2 disgruntled usually works. Why should their preference over-rule that of dozens or hundreds or thousands?

If/when more do it, they stop the encroaching PC culture in its tracks.

Annie Gaylor - Irritable

I find her snaggletooth and lack of makeup "grating."
