Rift forms in Texas GOP over tuition for unauthorized immigrants

Exposing a deep GOP rift on a rancorous immigration issue, Gov. Rick Perry and George P. Bush, the Republican candidate for land commissioner, this weekend defended providing in-state tuition for unauthorized immigrants. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz said he opposes the measure on principle, and state Sen. Dan Patrick, the party’s nominee for lieutenant governor, has vowed to repeal it.

In separate appearances at the Texas Tribune Festival at the University of Texas, Perry and Bush expressed views on in-state tuition that were in sync with state Sen. Wendy Davis’ pledge to veto “in a heartbeat” any repeal legislation that would cross her desk if she is elected governor. State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, sponsored the in-state-tuition bill.

On Sunday, Perry — who in 2001 signed the landmark legislation, making Texas the first state to offer in-state tuition to resident students without legal papers — associated himself with Bush’s remarks at the festival Friday, saying that, “until there’s a sensible alternative,” the law ought to remain on the books.

Attorney General Greg Abbott, the Republican candidate to succeed Perry as governor, has sought to sidestep the issue. Last year, his campaign issued a statement describing the law as “noble” in intent but “flawed” in design, and suggesting it needed to be reformed. He has yet to say how.

In answer to a question from a UT student, Perry said, “We have to remember that the reason we had to address this as a state was because of the federal government’s total and abject failure of securing our border with Mexico. So we don’t have the luxury of doing anything other than addressing this, and in 2001, members of the Legislature debated it, they talked about it, and they came to the conclusion that we had some options and the option they chose was in the best economic interests of the state of Texas.

“Young people who were here by no fault of their own, and I would suggest in every case that decision wasn’t made by a 6-year-old — ‘we’re going to the state of Texas so I can go to the University of Texas’ — but economically what was in the best interests of the state of Texas was to give these young people the opportunity to be givers rather than takers, to be a constructive part of this society, and that’s what we did,” Perry said.

We had to pay full tuition for our son to go to college in California. It was a small private college and they only have one rate. It was over $30K a year just for his tuition. Then there was rent, and books, shoes, clothes, food, gas, insurance car, insurance medical, utilities, internet, cell phone, furniture, car payment, etc. I paid it all. I didn’t buy a new car for myself from 1995 to 2011, when all of our kids were out of college. It CAN be done.

If you can’t afford the college you really want, find a cheaper one. Go to your local community college for the first two years! That cuts your college expenses almost in half!

Perry has lost my vote.

Since in-state tuition (benefits) have already been granted to felons as a REWARD for their felony, it will now be deemed a “constitutional right” that cannot be taken away. That is always the pathetic argument that is used.

I'm reminded about a governors race in Nebr. some yrs ago. Tom Osborne was leading & most thought he would be the next. However, he came out in favor of this & this is what I think lost it for him. Just a note to you Perry.

When Texas Tribune editor-in-chief and CEO Evan Smith, who was Perry’s interlocutor for the hourlong conversation that brought the festival to a close, noted that Perry was booed at the 2011 GOP debate for depicting critics of in-state tuition as heartless, Perry said, “that was probably a poor use of the term.”

It is certain to be an issue again if Perry presses ahead with a second campaign for president — a decision he said he would make sometime next year. This time around, Perry said, “I wouldn’t say that they were heartless. I would say I hope that I can explain to you why economically in 2001 this was the best thing for the state of Texas to do.”

Remember that Texas citizens did not even know Perry was giving illegals in-state tuition---that their taxes subsidized non-citizens. Texans only found out when Perry entered the 2012 prez race-----when it was revealed at the debates. THE REASON Perry is a lame duck Texas gov---he could never be reelected.

Gov Perry was so thoughtful---he even planned to build a highway to transport illegals from Mexico into Texas. The Trans-Texas Corridor....a series of highways, rails, and pipelines proposed by Perry to aid in the flow of "traffic" through the state of Texas and to solve many other logistics concerned with the flow of goods....and people.

Rick Perry's Trans Texas Corridor Plan....construction actually began in Mexico.

The project was later shelved.
