Turkey was a good cold war ally. They didn’t like the Russians.
One of my buddies spent 1983-85 in Turkey. His dad was a Coronel in the USAF. He was stationed in Ankara. He said that he felt perfectly safe walking around the city. They did not live on base. He said the people were very friendly towards Americans. Of course, much has changed in the middle east. Remember Beirut Lebanon was once a major tourist destination for Europeans. Not so much anymore.
