OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- An Oklahoma City-based energy company has unveiled a new formation in south-central Oklahoma that the company's CEO said will elevate the state as an oil producer.

Continental Resources Inc. said western Oklahoma's Springer Shale deposit is in the heart of the South Central Oklahoma Oil Province, Continental's last big discovery, The Oklahoman reported (http://bit.ly/1qk32sd).

Continental is reporting oil discoveries in Oklahoma which Hamm says will push Oklahoma production past Alaska and California. Hamm now expects Oklahoma to be the number 3 producer in the USA behind only TX & ND.

The industry survives in spite of 0bama’s effort to have us use wind and solar

Could we actually stop importing oil from the muslim countries? Probably not but we could cut back on the exporting of oil to them.

by my reckoning the USA will be completely oil independent in about 5 years. No need to import oil from anyone.

The wild card here is oil prices. If they fall significantly because of rising US oil production then US oil production increases will stop.

I’m counting on OPEC to cut back their oil production to keep prices high but you never know.

electricity and oil are in different energy venues for now. so they don’t directly compete against each other.

That will change 5-10 years if electric cars gain traction and their volumes rise significantly. then it will be a whole new game.

We don’t, or at least not much.

Europe, China, Japan, etc. are another story, and oil remains a fungible commodity.

Well, we could make sure the moslems keep blowing each other up.

Where would that happen...in the Southern warm-climate urban commuter market?

No that’s not what will drive it. The rich gulf countries need $90@ barrel to pay for their government. So they’ll cut production to keep prices high—rather than slim down their spending.

yes absolutely. there’s no coincidence that the tesla is built in sunny perfect climate california. but there are plenty of other places in the USA from texas to florida where the temperature works for electric cars. These are places that have a lot of cars.

Well bubba, I am a Texan and have been going on 50 years now and you got it all wrong about lots of places in these parts where electric cars would be useful. Texas is hot, real hot and when you flip the switch for air conditioning in one of those cute lectric cars the useful range goes to the basement. Power required to turn an AC compressor is about 6-7 HP not counting the interior fan for circulation.

Range will almost be cut in half but when it gets cold the heaters kill range even more. So you can count any meaningful use of electric cars here a pipe dream unless it is just for momma to run to the grocery store.

But it never gets cold in TX. Or AZ, NM, LA, MS, AL, GA, FL, SC or NC!

And, by the way, you have to run the A/C in many states with the heat slightly on the prevent condensation on the windshields ....

Well, you’re probably right. Local climate conditions will impede the spread of the electric cars. Still there’s plenty enough places where the weather is good enough to give these cars room to grow if their prices come down.

Even a ten percent drop in demand will put a serious dent in oil prices.

I’m hoping this will not happen before 2020 because I want oil prices to stay high enough to allow fracking around the USA to continue growing production until the USA is oil independent.

I’m hoping that at some point OPEC will scale back production to keep prices high because they need high prices for to run their governments patronage system.

In any case, if electric cars are a hit—they won’t make a demand before 2020. If figure after 2020 or so oil prices are going to get ground down for many reasons—not least of which will be the change over to natural gas buildings trains trucks and buses.

Yes, but 0bama is at war with all fosil fuels. Closing coal plants, preventing the Keystone pipeline.
