One in four Americans want their state to secede from the U.S., but why?

For the past few weeks, as Scotland debated the wisdom of independence, Reuters has been asking Americans how they would feel about declaring independence today, not from the United Kingdom, but from the mother country they left England to create. The exact wording of the question was, “Do you support or oppose the idea of your state peacefully withdrawing from the United States of America and the federal government?”

To be fair, the US government didn’t seem happy about the prospect of Scotland seceding. I have been pretty annoyed at some Americans who have watched a lot of Braveheart and ignorantly perceive Scotland as a colony under an English boot advocating the destruction of our union when they would be horrified and bitterly opposed to even allowing a vote on the issue with THEIR country. What is good for the goose is good for the gander and all that.

Can’t all the states simply secede from DC, and reform under the constitution, leaving DC to revert to Haiti?

I don’t see secession as a reasonable answer,but we need to get the feds back to their proper place in the U.S.A.

What's the point in that? Washingtonians aren't the problem, the problem are the clowns the people of the 50 states send to Washington. If you moved the Capitol to Omaha, Omaha would be crazy.

The Declaration of Independence is still the founding document of our country and the principles enshrined in that document are still valid.

The Federal Government is 1000 times more tyrannical now than the British Government was under George III.

The states may not merely have a right to secede, but it may be a duty.

The Federal Government is 1000 times more tyrannical now than the British Government was under George III.

Have you actually read the Declaration of Independence? Specifically this:

Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Since the Federal Government draws its powers from the consent (however misguided) of the governed and since the Constitution provides many mechanisms for the people to alter their government, you don't even have the Declaration to fall back on. A majority of the voting public voted for Obama -- a majority of the 13 colonies did NOT vote for George III. There's a critical difference there.

17 trillion of debt, divided by 330 million people, comes to 50,000 per person or 200,000 for a family of four. Sooner or later, it will make economic sense to secede.

I do not want to succeed but I would be delighted to give California back to Mexico and give Canada Detroit and Seattle. Then we could draw a line right below Wilmington ,De from the Chesapeake Bay around Washington DC Metro, Philadelphia and Baltimore metros to the point where the line would intersect at New York Connecticut and Massachussets and remove that part of the country.

The country will have collapsed well before. Probably first economically, then militarily. The only real question is what follows afterwards.

The Federal Government has become an out of control monster swallowing up everything in our land. The Federal Government considers the American People their number one enemy. The American People are learning this and returning the feeling.

This is not new with Obama, this has been building for decades. There has been no turnover in this growth, even under Reagan. We need a U-Turn, not timid little fritterings around the edges. The GOP as currently established is no answer. Even Rush Limbaugh has said this week that he doesn't get disappointed by the GOP, because he expects nothing from it as currently lead. Sounds like he's becoming Buddhist, expect nothing and you will never be disappointed.

Levin reported that Boehner & Co were planning to remove all authority from GOP member of congress, who vote against him as Speaker. That's your GOP. His splitting the GOP the answer? A new party? Join the Libertarian or Constitutional Parties? Take over the GOP? How's that going?

Buy gold, silver and ammo.

After reading the responses to some of those,”Man on the street” questions about our government, “branches of government, party in power, Supreme Court rules, etc. I can easily believe that a significant number don’t even know what state they are living in let alone condone secession. Can you secede from the “State of Denial?”

You obviously proceed from the stupid notion that our Rights come from government.

That is this people supposedly “vote” for a MarxoFascist tyranny (disregarding blatant fraud) that then neuters and abolishes our Rights by legal precedents and decrees, you suggest that somehow that has more force of ‘law’ than the Declaration of Independence???

Sorry bub, the Declaration is an affirmation that our Rights come from The Divine Power - and as such, supersede and are higher than any “law” of men or government. Government has no jurisdiction to infringe or intrude on our Rights, yet they do so under the ‘color of law’ that you would say trumps the Declaration.

We as a people are no longer consenting to be governed - we are being RULED, robbed, coerced and threatened with clear violations of the Constitution itself.

At this point, if a moral people still want a Republic, then the Declaration of Independence is the only just force of law we have left to safeguard our Divine gifts, since the Constitution has been corrupted and abrogated to the tyrannical rule of evil men.

It lumps together people who want out for exactly opposite reasons.

Why not a 'liberal' United States and a 'conservative' United States? Part of the agreement would be that the two new governments would help 'move' those citizens caught in the wrong States at the time of separation.

The Declaration is not a governing document and has no force of law.

It has the force of NATURAL LAW. It assumes that our rights as delineated in that document come from God and not men and that whenever the government becomes destructive of those rights, it becomes the duty of the people to overthrow it, by whatever means necessary. If secession is the only remaining means (such as the Declaration of Independence) then that is the means that needs to be implemented.

Part of the problem is that we here in Arizona don't find a whole lot of sane Californians in California. Every time I talk to a Californian, he or she talks tales-of-woe about your governor, your taxes, your traffic problems, you Democrats, and your homosexuals, and your AIDS problems.

Then in the next breathe, you guys talk about the wondrous California weather, the number of MENSA members who live in La Jolla, and how USC's coming back next year.

No sympathy from me, Prune-Pickers. You've made your own problems. Now get your head out of your weather reports and do something about them.
