The survey that proves the republic is unsalvageable

One in three Americans can’t name a single branch of the U.S. government, according to a poll from the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania.

The survey, which was conducted from July 8 to 14, and published Sept. 17, found that only 36 percent of respondents could name all three branches of government, while an alarming 35 percent of survey respondents couldn’t name a single branch.

The poll, which contains a margin of error of plus or minus 3.06 percent, surveyed 1,416 U.S. adults aged 18 and older.

The report also found that only 27 percent of respondents say they are aware Congress needs a two-thirds majority in order to override a presidential veto.

Lastly, 21 percent of survey respondents believe that a 5-4 decision from the U.S. Supreme Court is sent back to Congress for further discussion and reconsideration.

“Although surveys reflect disapproval of the way Congress, the President and the Supreme Court are conducting their affairs, the Annenberg survey demonstrates that many know surprisingly little about these branches of government,” Kathleen Hall Jamieson, the polling group’s director, said in a statement. “This survey offers dramatic evidence of the need for more and better civics education.”

Two more findings from the survey:

Asked which party has the most members in the House of Representatives, 38 percent said they knew the Republicans are the majority, but 17 percent responded the Democrats and 44 percent reported that they did not know (up from 27 percent who said they did not know in 2011).

Asked which party controls the Senate, 38 percent correctly said the Democrats, 20 percent said the Republicans and 42 percent said they did not know (also up from 27 percent who said they did not know in 2011).

In short, the republic is doomed. Doomed.

Oh my. Ponder for a moment this question from the Civics test . . . ‘Show how good home life tends to decrease the need of government.’

only 36 percent of respondents could name all three branches of government,

Only a temporary setback. If it wasn't for the home schoolers screwing up the curve, that number could have been much lower.

Obviously, home schooling should be declared a subversive, terrorist activity and made illegal and then we can get those percentages back down around Zero where they should be.

To: Graybeard58

Let me preface my comments by offering apologies to you, Graybeard58. My tirade is not directed at you, specifically (I don’t even know you), but to the entire FreeRepublic community)...

I’m a Christian, conservative school teacher. Everything everyone has said about the state of public education is absolutely, positively true. As it has been said and re-said ad nauseam here at Free Republic, our public schools are failing. The solution proposed? Blow them up...take your kids out...close the the buildings. Guess what? That’s not the solution. You will still have a vast percentage of the population that are ill-equipped to handle life as free, independent, responsible citizens. There is only one solution: take the schools over. But, you are not going to take them over from without. You must take them over from within. Conservatives must be willing to join the fray...and take up the cause...in front of the young skulls full of mush. All of you that think that your biting rhetoric against an obviously failing system is going to accomplish anything show yourselves to be a bit naive. Talking the talk...and that’s it. How long have schools been a failure now? How long have you all been singing the same old song? How have your tactics worked? The ship just keeps on sinking (faster and faster with each passing school year) and all you have is a bunch of empty (void of effect) rhetoric.

If this is the sum total of your “plan” - to sit and wring your hands, then please move on to the next thread/next topic. Discontinue your talk. Take up some other cause. You have nothing to say, nothing to add. You are a mere gas bag belching out the same tired old smoke that makes you feel good for the moment but only serves to temporarily putrefy the air before fading into nothingness. As a teacher, I can tell you first-hand there is nothing worse than listening to a bunch of whiners complain and bemoan the fact that they have work to do...and won’t lift a finger to do it (I hear it each and every day from about 100 or so resistant students.) If you are serious about changing schools, if you want to change the results of surveys like this, then you’d better go to the place where the proper results can be achieved - in front of the classroom, before 20-30 young know-nothings/do-nothings and fill them with the knowledge (and, better, understanding) that will inculcate them with the values necessary to become productive American citizens (for there is no better kind on this good earth).

Until such time as there is a vast increase in the number of conservatives willing to become school teachers and board members and even “educrats”, willing to counter the directionless, pointless state of public education, willing to recognize that this is not a hopeless cause, but one of the most vital causes facing our nation today, willing to FIGHT to return American education to the place of preeminence in the world, we should not be surprised by anything the enemy does to young people. He is a slave-master, he is a deceiver, he is a liar. He plays for keeps. You may imagine that I am talking about the Devil, and, to a degree, I suppose that I am. But I am also talking about the liberal/progressive, whose plan it is to destroy this country, and is succeeding without ever having to fire a single shot. Where’s the loyal resistance? Where’s the fight, conservative American? Have you, too, lost touch with your history? Would the Founders have stood for this? what would they say to YOU about your shrinking back from this [apparently] necessary fight?

Public education has inflicted a long train of abuses on American school children for some time. It is, for all intents and purposes a war being waged on the very underpinnings of America (I don’t believe that to be an exaggeration, given some of the comments I’ve read over the years here at FR). ‘How long will loyal Americans tolerate this,’ is really the question. How long before talk becomes action, words become movements, ideas become actual plans? the answer is not to withdraw from this fight but to engage this fight - where it is waged, with more powerful weapons (ideas) and to win.

Anything less is ceding the battlefield.

When the non-decadent states secede and set up an ascendant republic, U.S. history, government, and the Constitution will be required study in all schools.

Your plan is reasonable and would have worked if started a generation ago. But we don’t have time for that now with an educational system run by enemies of liberty.

Save your children by homeschooling or putting them in private school. Turning them over to enemies, to be indoctrinated rather than educated, is lunacy.

This is why we need to have basic governmental knowledge testing for voting eligibility. Anyone who doesn’t have a basic understanding of how our government is structured and works would not be eligible to vote. Period. And for all levels of government (local, state, federal).

I mentioned on a thread several weeks ago, how the people I worked with could not name the three branches of government, yet thought themselves to be politically astute, I remember thinking at the time someone should do a survey.

I have never seen a time when we weren’t of like mind. Everyone is doing what is right in their own mind, A sign of the end times.

Even here on FR we are not of like mind. We all have a different interpretation of conservatism. Conservatism is what ever we want it to mean that day and it changes from day to day.

If you ask people at church why they go, they can’t tell you. If you ask what they read in their Bible this past week, they run away.

Jesus last prayer on earth was that we be of one mind with the Father..................................

I heard 12 million during the last Clinton years. My guess is 30 million illegal aliens now but even worse is that they are mixed into families of legal aliens/immigrants. So these legal green card immigrants have an interest in keeping the illegals here.

So many combo families now with say a legal wife and illegal father with half the children being legal US citizens due to being born here and the other half are those BS “Dreamers” who were smuggled here

Just think of the movie The Blob

I’m talking about the children of this country who are being gobbled up by progressive dogma. That we say, “it’s too late,” is, in my view a cop-out. Then you might as well settle in for living under socialism (you and your posterity) for the rest of your life.

That, I’m sorry to say, is not the talk of someone who deserves to be listened to. Time is running out. You must fight the fight today, or, be assured, you WILL be fighting tomorrow

Can you please point out where I said “it’s too late,”? You put words in my mouth and then say that is not the talk of someone who deserves to be listened to.

Homeschooling or putting your kids in private school IS fighting the fight today. Turning your kids over to government run education to be indoctrinated is lunacy.

It is probably not the children of conservatives (i.e. those who homeschool/those who private school) that need to be won over, but those who do not have options. FR anti public Ed. Posters are always oh so willing to write these children off—you know, the ones who are being lost to progressivism. To ignore this is to cede this battlefield to the enemy.

I think we agree that education is currently in the grip of progressives. My point is that government has no business in education whatsoever.

Government will never teach the limits of their power to citizens. It is not in their interest to do so. I wish you well in your struggle ... I can only imagine your frustrations.
