Alex Salmond this afternoon dramatically quit as Scotland's First Minister after voters rejected independence in yesterday's referendum.
The First Minister said he would stand down in November to let the next generation take over the fight to lead Scotland out of the Union.
Mr Salmond announced his departure at a press conference this afternoon. He said his 'party, Parliament and country' would benefit from 'new leadership'.
But he fired a warning shot at David Cameron not to go back on his promise to transfer sweeping new powers to Holyrood within six months.

I’m with him in spirit - Regarding my own home country, the US.
A political casualty of the referendum.
But the bigger message is devolution is no longer something reserved only for the Scots.
England will have to get an elected government and Parliament.
Its the only national region with no real say over its own afairs.
Something has got to give.
I think the Scots are going to find out that Cameron’s promises aren’t worth .......

At least responsible government still means something. The Scottish ministry lost confidence and Salmond was right to resign his post.
They may, but if so, the Scots will have grounds for another kick at the can, holding that what the U.K. promised to keep them in was not delivered. If that is enough to cause 10% of the no vote to change, they will win.
I don’t believe their decision was based on those promises. In any event, he had no right to make them.
Nah, it won’t happen again for a very long time.
Devolution is here to stay.
Theoretically, Parliament could undo it and claw back its powers but in practice it will never happen because the political costs of doing so make it unlikely.
Parliament is more absolute in theory than in reality.
Such a vote IMO should require a 62-67% threshold to pass. That is too big a move IMO to just have a slim majority cause such major change.
It would more dramatic to step down immediately than wait for November

What is important is the question was clear and voters were given a real choice.
If they had to voted to leave, no one in the rest of the UK would have stood in their way.
Scots exercised their democratic right to decide their future and they can be proud.
Just like Reince Priebus should have resigned after Obama got reelected.

The Province Of Canada achieved responsible government in 1848.
Behind Westminster government is the principle that when the government loses the confidence of the people or the elected house to which it answers, it must resign.
This is the principle behind parliamentary government in every country that has it.
In a parliamentary system, one generally wants to give one’s party time to select a successor as there is no obvious line of succession and sticking in either a caretaker or an immediate successor in haste can result in all sorts of shenanigans.
I’m not sure if this even affects the USA but the vote wasn’t that close.
The problem the Scots have with Britain is it’s not liberal enough!!
