While Great Britain is holding its breath today to see if the Scots vote for independence, most Americans (51%) have no opinion about the referendum and only 33% think most of their fellow countrymen can even locate Scotland on a map.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 30% of American Adults favor Scotland becoming an independent nation rather than remaining part of Great Britain. Nineteen percent (19%) oppose them gaining independence, but half of Americans (51%) are undecided.

And yes, I could find Scotland on a map. That doesn’t make me a genius.

Exactly. Reminds me of those Brits who think they are so cosmopolitan because they book cheap vacations to Spain and stay drunk in the tourist compound the whole time.

I posted this picture earlier and few people recognize this state. I recognize it but I live here and know my state well.

I will tell you the truth-I didn't know, but I guessed the first time that it was Michigan, because something about the upper and lower peninsula popped into my mind when I looked at it :D

What a strange survey question. Not can one locate Scotland on a map, but how many of our "fellow countrymen" can locate Scotland on a map.

Was the survey about Scotland or about how dumb we think our "fellow countrymen" are?

Michigan probably has one of the more unrecognizable borders because the state is usually defined by natural geological features rather than cartographic ones.

I know where it is. Visited Scotland in 2006. I enjoyed Scotland much more than I did Ireland.

I would never have guessed Michigan and I was a Geography major. I thought it might be New Hampshire mainly because I don’t know anything about those New England states.

Here is one of my favorite Geography questions.

What is the largest city, in the largest county in the largest state, East of the Mississippi?

That’s interesting. I hope to visit Ireland someday, but perhaps I better make it over to Scotland, as well.

Guessed Michigan because of cripplecreek, which reminded me of Battle Creek. Checked your profile page and saw the Michigan flag.

Now you cannot shift gears and go from largest land area to largest population.....if it is all population, then i suppose it is nyc or miami
