Republican Joni Ernst pulls ahead of Dem in Iowa Senate poll

Republican Joni Ernst has pulled ahead of Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley in the Iowa Senate race, according to a new poll that points to a heated battle for votes in the final stretch.

The Quinnipiac University survey showed Ernst, a state senator, leading Braley by 6 points, 50-44 percent among likely voters. The poll also showed her leading among independents, a key voting bloc.

The results are a break from earlier polling which for months has shown Braley leading or tied with his GOP rival.

Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll, said in a statement put out by the university that while “some pundits back east” may have mocked Ernst’s ads in which she talked about living on a farm, “they send an effective message to Iowans that she is one of them.”

There are signs, though, that both candidates in the race are trying to moderate their message after a long stretch of nasty advertising. Millions of dollars’ worth of personal attack ads have been clogging the airwaves all year, but Braley and Ernst are suddenly reversing course.

There was an article on here yesterday stating that the Senate Conservative Fund (SCF) had not given Joni Ernst any money for her General Election bid; after supporting her in the Primary. I don’t understand why the SCF is holding back money in a race this close. Anyone have a clue? See yesterday’s article here:

Braley's falling behind? I swear---it's a dam shame that Democrat Senate candidate Bruce Braley IS NOT a beneficiary of Obama's delay on immigration reform. The White House ding-a-ling's asserted the delaying tactic would help senate candidates like Cong Bruce Braley---a key race for Dems---b/c the delay stops the use of immigration as a grandstanding issue.

OTOH, Latino pressure groups are incensed about Obama's renegging.

REALITY CHECK.......a tsunami of 2014 voter polls indicate massive voter revulsion for Democrats---a decisive vote of "no confidence." So much so that Democrat,s themselves, forced Obama to delay his plan to E/O amnesty---hoping to stave off disaster to protect uneasy Democrats from voter wrath in November.....

But Democrat Rep. Luis Gutierrez (Dem-Ill), the leading mouthpiece for amnesty, isn't taking Obama's dismissal lying down. Gutierrez said the Congressional Hispanic Caucus will meet to determine a formal response....and seemed to issue a veiled threat to the ambitions of vulnerable Democrats like Cong Braley.

GUTIERREZ: “No more excuses, I don’t care what senator is dangling in the wind, I don’t care what Republican proposal is being made,” he said. “I don’t care what happens. We are moving forward.”

CONG BRALEY NEEDS TO DETERMINE WHETHER GUTIERREZ IS PLOTTING A COUP AGAINST DEMOCRATS?---his mouthings sound dangerously like a latino threat to vulnerable Democrats like Braley.
Question is: are Democrats like Braley who have been so loyal going to allow Gutierrez to threaten their re/elections?

Braley need to get cracking and demand to know the details
about an individual threatening his candidacy. For instance:

I don’t know. I do know that outside groups have been sending money to WA, MI and a third race I can’t remember, maybe NH, probably to force democrats to spend money there, draining their funds.

The "big news" has been that there have been three Iowa polls since the beginning of the month showing Braley leading ... sometimes I think they just make this stuff up to write stories about it.

I'd expect Braley to lose -- but I said the same thing about Obama just 2 years ago...

I'm a little worried that we haven't made more inroads against Hagin, but I still think that one will go our way, as will KY (ugh), AR, don't know about LA or AK. We need one of those to prevent a tie.

The polls are all over the map because the fundamentals that allow polls to measure public sentiment are broken. We gave up door to door polls years ago in favor of telephone based polls. Phone calls don’t work very well anymore with the drop in land line phones and the dominance of cell phones. So, everyone has come up with their own special sauce to normalize the results and since their is no agreement on what works, you get different results.

Add to that the newspaper and TV woes which means that less money is being spent on public polls, and therefore they aren’t as good as they used to be. We never see the private polls that the campaigns pay for, they are probably better than the public ones, but it’s hard to tell.
