Kansas, a Metaphor for the Republican Party
weeklystandard.com ^ | 9/17/14 | Jay Cost

All things being equal, Republicans should feel reasonably good about winning the Senate in seven weeks. They currently hold a polling lead in six Democratic-held seats. They are within five points in another four seats, and mid-September polling often underestimates the position of the ultimate victor. Meanwhile, the two seats that were long thought to be vulnerable -- Georgia and Kentucky -- look reasonably firm for them.

Pat Roberts

But this is the Republican party we are talking about, and all else is not equal. Because of Kansas.

A new poll by Democratic polling outfit Public Policy Polling puts incumbent Republican incumbent Pat Roberts in the fight of his life, trailing by seven points against an independent challenger Greg Orman. The good news for the GOP is that a near majority of Kansans in the poll (49 percent) want the Senate to be held by Republicans next year. So, assuming Roberts frames the race as a contest between a Republican and an effective Democrat, he should close the gap.

But still -- it should never have come to this. In fact, the rolling disaster that is the Kansas Senate race serves as a pretty apt metaphor for the Republican party in the age of Obama.

On the one hand, we have Pat Roberts. At 78 years old, he has been in Congress since 1981, and does not really live in the state any more. He is the embodiment of the out-of-touch, behind-the-times, career politician. Put simply, he is the Republican establishment.

"The dissension has given the Democrats a yet another cheap shot to sneak yet another Democrat into the Senate when a decent Republican should win easily. We’ll KS add it to the list: CO-2010, DE-2010, NV-2010, IN-2012, MO-2012."

Oh, the Establishment mouthpieces like the Weekly Standard just LOVE mentioning these five races.

But nary a mention of CA-2010 (Fiorina), FL-2012 (Mack), WI-2012 (Thompson), MT-2012 (Rehberg), VA-2012 (Allen), ND-2012 (Berg), MI-2012 (Hoekstra) and NM-2012 (Wilson)

All their candidates went down in flames in 2012.

Ah yes, the Republican Senatorial Reelection Committee and Mitch McConnell at work. And how about us that listened to the talkers ( Hugh Hewitt specifically ) that these are the candidates to donate too, click here and donate to one and or all from linked website(s). I donated some real money to give President Romney a Conservative Senate.

How did that work out for us...

The Dem's are 40 years ahead of us, I don't see how we pull it off from here going forward with the gang that can't shoot straight. Don't even go to the fact that they want our money, time and support but don't want us speaking up, ergo what they have done to Alan West & M. Bachmann, and what they will do to Mike Lee and Ted Cruz when they get the chance.

How can you call Cotton a Democrat Liberal from his Post #1? Did you mean to address your comment to Post #2 by any chance?

Cotton WANTS Roberts to lose.

Cotton is an enemy to the Conservative cause, but Cotton causes his trouble by fomenting anger on the Right.

Cotton WANTS us to fight amongst ourselves.

Cotton is a TROLL!

OK, Kansas 58, everybody on here knows that YOU are a freakin’ Liberal RINO, not Cotton1706. You have your head so far up Pat Roberts’ wrinkled, old ass that if he ever did make an abrupt right turn, you’d have a severe neck injury. You don’t have the ba**s to go against an old fart who is 1 1/2 years away from being an Octogenarian and who hasn’t even lived in Kansas since his kids were in Elementary School. He is so far out of touch, he couldn’t find his ass with both hands. He’s just part of the “Good ol’ boy” club in the RINO Senate. But, Liberal RINOs like you will continue to vote for him even when he is drooling and shi**ing his diaper. YOU ARE THE LIBERAL.

YOU are also a Harry Reid supporter?

All you have is insults and trash.

You are helping Obama.

You are helping Harry Reid.

YOU are also an enemy of the conservative cause.

A question: If EVERY Democrat in Congress were replaced by someone who votes like Pat Roberts, would the Conservative Cause be better off or worse off?

Better off, of course.

Which proves that YOU are working for the enemy.

I have personally recruited well over two dozen candidates to run against sitting Republicans.

Many of those candidates WON!

I made the front pages of the local papers fighting against true Rino Governor Bill Graves.

You have NO facts on your side at all. Conservatives who actually LIVE in Kansas support Pat Roberts.

Oh really? So, that’s why a “not so desirable” GOP opponent got 4l% of the vote in the Primary; in which Roberts’ didn’t even break 50%? Oh hell yeah. Also if what you say is true, why is Roberts behind an Independent candidate in the polls right now, when the State of Kansas is “overwhelmingly” Republican; out numbering Democrats by 20%? Well, I guess you proved my point. Apparently you have a different definition of who, and what, a Conservative is. Kansas has always been a “Moderate” Republican state. Names like Dole and Kassebaum come to mind.

Now, calm down and go get back on your meds.

Roberts is one of those “diaper politicians”.

He’s needing to be changed, and for the same reason.

Were you even aware that a Libertarian ran for Governor under a legalize marijuana platform and she convinced MANY Democrats and Libertarians to vote in the Republican Primary?

Once in the Republican Primary, many of those same people voted for Milton Wolf. Wolf has never contributed even a penny to any conservative candidate other than himself. Wolf has not put up yard signs or made phone calls or walked door to door or endorsed or done ANYTHING for any other Conservative in Kansas. Wolf is a complete fraud and Wolf deserved to lose. Wolf would NEVER be able to defeat Orman.

And besides which THE PRIMARY IS OVER!

MANY Freepers would LOVE to have a Senator who votes like Roberts votes.

You are an egotistical, self centered, vindictive and self destructive ass IF you are really a “conservative”.

You are a treacherous troll if you are really an Obama and Harry Reid supporter.

Which is it?

So, YOU are voting for Orman?

Orman who has given tens of thousands of dollars to Obama and to Hillary and to the Democrat Party?

Kansas58 and I have crossed swords before but on this issue, he is right. I personally know a couple of conservatives who voted for Milton Wolf but far more who were quite skeptical of Wolf. All are now on board for Roberts.

Pat Roberts isn't the perfect candidate nor the perfect Senator but his voting record has been quite strong for a long time. Those withholding a vote from Roberts because they are mad that Wolf didn't win are cutting off their nose to spite their face. This isn't like the dilemma which faced conservatives who had to consider voting for Romney, the quintessential RINO. Pat Roberts has always been in the conservative camp.

I detest what the GOPe is doing to the conservative movement but voting against or withholding a vote from Roberts as a protest against GOPe is just misguided foolishness.

Nope, voting for Roberts.
Voted for Wolf in the primary.

Vote conservative in the primary,
vote anti-democrat in the general.

And were you aware that she got that idea from Pat Roberts' buddies in Mississippi; Thad Cochran and Haley Barbour?

That is simply not true. I am in KS and there are many conservatives, like me, who will not vote for Pat this time. If he can’t even follow the law to live in KS why would any of us trust him on making any other law. Roberts should have been honest about not living here and stepped aside. It would have been great if he had simply taken a page from Brwonback’s book and term limited himself. He chose, or much like Thad in MS someone chose for him, that he would run again.

I'll ask you the same question I asked Kansas58: If Roberts is so great, why did he not break 50% in the Primary against a "not so desirable" opponent who got 41% of the vote? But even more damning to Roberts begs to ask: Why is he losing, so badly, to an Independent in the polls now when the GOP in Kansas outnumbers the Democrats by 20%?

Kansas58 did not answer those questions. Can you give me an answer? Can anyone give me an answer? Could it be because most people in Kansas want a Senator who is not "from" Kansas but a Senator who "lives in" Kansas and is not out of touch?
