Obama initiative to hire veterans for federal jobs triggers resentment ("Too conservative")
Market Watch ^ | September 15, 2014 | Jeffry Bartash

Military veterans are receiving preferential treatment for many federal job openings, and as with any kind of preferential-treatment program, it’s causing a backlash.

In a remarkable story, the Washington Post describes growing tension between veterans and civilians who never served in the military throughout the federal government. Civilians complain that their veteran colleagues are conservative yes-men who don’t question authority and are sometimes lacking in the necessary skills. Some complained that male veterans sometimes act inappropriately around their women peers.

“You’re getting a very conservative worker that’s very narrow-minded,” said one civilian who works in the Office of Personnel Management.

Veterans, for their part, say some civilians are condescending, lack a strong work ethic and don’t have a sense of mission.

The growing tension is the result of an Obama administration initiative to hire more veterans that began five years ago, when many of them were returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Veterans constituted nearly half of all full-time hires in 2013, marking the biggest effort to reward veterans in more than four decades.

The tension should come as no surprise. Civilians and their peers from the military developed skills and habits in very different environments....

Sounds like someone needs "diversity" training, and it isn't the veterans.

There’s always been veteran’s preference in federal and state hiring. Get over it.

I worked for the DOD and the non-vets were far more likely to be boot-licking @ss-kissers and incompetent fools than the veterans. Vets were less likely to suffer fools gladly. At least amongst the ex-enlisted men. It might be different for ex-officers but I doubt it.

Yeah, the military veterans know discipline, self-motivation and hard work they learned in military training. The civilian government workers don’t know discipline, lack motivation and have sloppy work habits because they learned in the liberal public sector unions how to get by without doing anything worthwhile because they can’t get fired anyway.

Well the vets are not being hired by the post office here in Chicago (at least not in my neighborhood). The mail people I see are talking to their peeps on their phones as they deliver the mail (to the wrong addresses).

Wha?

Don’t veterans get preference for all fed jobs going back many decades?

Haven’t they always taken crap from civ colleagues?

This is nothing new

What is new, and no one will admit to, is that Hispanics and blacks get preference. In all areas. Scholarships for being non white. Federal handouts for being illegal.

Vets don’t get that for being born into a group

Anyone can be a vet. If they can’t d/t a disability, they will get preference for that

And what’s with the swipe? Some vets are schmoozed snit most vets are not as productive as workers as fed employees??

What is this? A desperate attempt to make Prince Obola a great provider to the military just before the election?

He’s desperate. No one in the military save some oprahfied wives will buy it

Yep, even after 40 years, that ol' training is still a great part of my life. It lingers and I'm thankful for it.

During the Bush admin, I’ve heard liberals say veterans shouldn’t even be allowed to vote. This, I suppose, is mostly because Michael Moore said they were all stupid, they just liked to shoot people, and of course the little fact that most of them vote Republican.

Vets were less likely to suffer fools gladly.

That's why this administration hates them. Actually, anyone who doesn't "suffer fools gladly" is despised by these fools.

Reading between the lines...

Federal jobs are reserved exclusively for affirmative action hires.
