Al Gore vs. Reality on Planetary Ice Caps and Global Warming

It appears that reality is not cooperating with the myth that man-made CO2 is causing global warming. Recent satellite images show that both the Arctic and the Antarctic sea ice have dramatically increased in size and thickness.

Despite Al Gore’s 2007 apocalyptic predictions that in just 7 more years the Arctic ice cap will be “completely gone,” it has instead dramatically increased by 43% in size since 2012. The North Pole ice cap grew by 1.715 million square kilometers, an area the size of Alaska, in the last two years. In solidarity, the South Pole ice cap has also reached record-breaking levels, and now stands at 20 million square kilometers, the highest level since records began.

Al Gore (2007): "The [Arctic] ice cap is falling off a cliff. It could be completely gone in summer in as little as 7 years from now."

" It could be completely gone in summer in as little as 7 years from now.""

Well, he did say COULD be completely gone..... He knows how to cover his bases in order to keep the money rollin' in. Hey albore. Maybe you need to crank up the Lear and make a bunch of passes over the south pole to help speed up the ice melt for their upcoming spring.

All this hyperbole is founded on "since records have been kept." Like whatever happened before the "records were kept" is moot. X-Cuse me but one of these days someone will be wishing it was warmer. Like when glaciers return to Glacier National Park and NYC has 1000 feet of ice over it.

I am certain that at some point that they will all say...look we did it, we reversed global warming , it`s just a matter of time

I’ve been saying that for two years now.

The Grand Kenyan said that “if we elect him, it will be the time when Global Warming reversed.”

We did, and it did.

The guy is good, yes?

The sea ice surrounding Antarctica set an all-time record HIGH yesterday at 16.3 million square kilometers.

Antarctic sea ice usually reaches its yearly high between September 28 and October 10 each year, so setting a record high this early means it will very, very likely get even larger over the next four weeks.....

Arctic sea ice this entire year has been lower than average, but within 2 standard deviations of its 1970-1990 average area all year - which means it has stayed within “normal ranges” the whole year.

Net sea ice is positive (we have a total sea ice area above average for the entire earth, but the Antarctic sea ice is at latitude 59, 60, and 61 south -> This means it reflects back into space a little over 5 times the amount of energy hitting the Arctic sea ice up north at latitude 79 and 80 north!

Wait just a rohdamn minute. It reflects 5 times the energy?

I guess we don’t need oil, just ice.

algore has made north of $300M on his various AGW scams, so, what's a little crow, now and then?

Al Gore is a con man who is working for the mid east countries. He received over $100 million in bribes to undermine his country.

Nope, nope, no it didn’t — Who are you going to believe ALGORE or your lying eyes...

Ah yes, probably will take credit for it at his last state of the union, or certainly at his last press conference.

The Obama library will no doubt have a wing dedicated to his part in reversing global warming.

but but you fail to understand that global warming quite often involves cold weather and increased ice on occasion.

What is SOOOOO AWESOME about Obama is that global warming stopped due to his policies 10 YEARS BEFORE HE WAS ELECTED!

Wow!

What we know from our brief time (in geological years) on planet Earth, is that it has spent more time as an ice cube than a plush jungle. Somehow the global alarmists keep missing this point. Global warming is far preferred over global cooling. My favorite thing is how the growth of the ice fields in area and depth is caused by global warming according to the apologists who keep carrying the banner in spite of the data in front of them. This is the sort of hubris that leads to them needing to be rescued as they are trapped by ice while on a mission to prove the ice is receding. You can’t make this stuff up, it is so absurd it begs the question of how supposedly intelligent people can be so easily duped.

LOL! Maybe the supposedly intelligent people are really not that smart after all. Looks that way to me. I’ve known PhD’s that are brilliant with theory but are completely lost when reality sets in. To the point of scratching your head and wonder how the hell they were ever able to complete a thesis and who were the folks that bought the thesis?

Its just the opposite.

Reflection of sunlight at both poles is highest during each poles warm months.

When the sea ice in the north breaks up, it is trapped there by land in the colder latitudes and continues to reflect. When the sea ice in the south breaks up it moves away from the pole to warmer latitudes, melts quicker, and reflects less ice.

The reflection of sunlight from the land ice in the north is about the same as in the south

The Arctic Sea Ice Problem is Actually Worse-Not Better-Than We Thought

No it doesn't.

The Arctic sea ice - once disbursed by winds in the summer from a packed mass into sections - is swept by currents and the prevailing winds through the Greenland-Canada straits (and some down the east coast of Greenland) into the north Atlantic. Where all of it promptly melts.

Your claim that it is trapped and continues to reflect is dead wrong. Once ANY arctic or antarctic sea ice reaches an area less than 15% covered, the satellites and surveys reject it and it is NOT included in ANY report as “sea ice”. It is NOT continuing to reflect as you claim.

Worse - from your argument's sake - is that Arctic sea ice through its summer melting season of longer days of sunlight - is exposed to a daily top-of-atmosphere sunlight levels that are MUCH LESS than the Antarctic ice. Earth's sunlight reaches its MINIMUM of 1320 watts/m^2 July 4; its MAXIMUM solar radiation is January 4-5 at 1410 watts/m^2 occurs near the maximum of Antarctic sea ice extents in mid-February!

(Today, near the Arctic minimum sea ice extents and Antarctic maximum sea ice extents, BOTH POLES receive the SAME top-of-atmosphere radiation. But, as mentioned above and which you kindly ignored, the Arctic sea ice edge is at latitude 80 north, the Antarctic sea ice edge is at latitude 59 south. The Antarctic sea ice edge, now at record high levels, is receiving 5 times the radiation each second that the small bit of Arctic sea ice is getting.

Worse, the arctic sea ice acts as a “blanket” over the otherwise open arctic waters during all months between late August and early April. If Arctic sea ice recedes from today's levels those seven months of the year, MORE energy is lost every minute by increased evaporation heat losses, increased convection heat losses, increased conduction heat losses, and increased radiation heat losses from the now-open ocean than can be gained by the fleeting moments of low-angle solar exposure each day at noon.

True, between May and early August, the exposed Arctic waters due absorb more solar energy than they lose by evaporation, radiation, and convection. But, only during those months.

The rest of the time?

Loss of Arctic sea ice from today's levels seven months of the year means increased loss of heat energy to space.
Gains in Antarctic sea ice in ANY month of the year means increased reflection of solar energy, and increased loss of heat energy into space!

It is the Antarctic sea ice extents that matters. You are wrong. The propaganda you are quoting is wrong.
