Samsung accuses rival LG exec of vandalising washing machines

Sun, Sep 14 2014

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS: Quote, Profile, Research) has accused the head of rival LG Electronics Inc's (066570.KS: Quote, Profile, Research) home appliances business of damaging Samsung washing machines at retail stores in Germany and asked Seoul prosecutors to investigate.

Samsung, in a statement on Sunday, said it asked the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office to investigate LG employees who the company says were seen deliberately destroying several of its premium washing machines on display at two stores earlier this month ahead of the IFA electronics show in Berlin.

"It is very unfortunate that Samsung had to request that a high-ranking executive be investigated by the nation's legal authorities, but this was inevitable, as we concluded that we had to get to the bottom of this incident," Samsung said.

We too bought LG w & d about 3 years ago. I certainly hope for your sake that they have greatly improved their QA. Same goes for their microwaves and fridge. Each item was retuned to HD. Never again will I own LG...”Lifes Garbage”.

I feel that way about General Electric, Kitchen Aid and Bosch.

Pretty soon there will be no brand that is good.

My washing machine is Lilly White, but it does have a black agitator inside.

Cool! I’m jealous. I just bought white LG top loaders because I couldn’t justify the extra $400 to get them in red. So, I painted the laundry room walls red. It looks terrific. Warm and welcoming. The room is long and narrow (the whole width of the house) with lots of oak cabinets and white counters. The combination of red walls, new stone floors (grey), oak cabinets and white appliances is terrific.

Enjoy your red machines.

What! They told me it was the same price.

I think yours were $400 less because you got top loaders. :-O

I actually find this accusation believable. LG and Samsung are absolutely fierce competitors with each other in Korea, and in general, and past experience has shown they are not above resorting to dirty tricks to gain an advantage. Dirty tricks like designing phones to run in a special high power consumption overclocked mode when they detect certain benchmarks are being run, delivering performance that is not comparable to what the end user will see. Stuff like employing people to surf forums and review sites and write glowing reviews and comments about their products while denigrating their competitor’s. So, attempting to make their competitor’s products look bad on the showroom floor would not be completely out of character.

No. There is an up charge for color. I could have gotten mine in white, red, or “chrome shadow”. I have a saga of a tale about these machines (3 different sets delivered here and 2 sent back.) By the time we chose this white (and chrome and glass) set, we’d already started on the red paint. Since I loved the red walls so much, the temptation to pay more to get red machines just wasn’t there any more.

I had one set of platinum delivered (arrived damaged and sent back). They were the same price, but that was because the store already had them (although the set they delivered was not the set I looked at in the store.)

Sounds really lovely. Would love to see your kitchen ... sounds very creative!

I wasn’t able to get my washer dryer into the space provided even though my new house was built just months ago. So the delivery people did not leave them at the house.

I had to call a “third-party-installer’ who is charging me an extra $180.00 to install.

Two days ago the delivery people left them at my house.

Now, I’m trying to reach the installer to beg him to come out. In the meantime the wash is building up. I’m desperate.

Well, I didn't actually buy that car - it was a "spoof" of the candy apple red washer and dryer.
However, back in the day I did own a '68 Camaro SS (350) similar to this ...

We did the top-load Whirlpool Cabrio, low water usage type washer and dryer. They work great, mostly.

Some complaints. Washing large items like a big quilt...internal “agitator” tends to roll up the quilt in a donut shape! Not sure that hurts the cleaning effort.

Other issue...I’d like the option to run a full tub of water sometimes...which they don’t do.

Not a real issue, but...wash cycles can take a LONG time.

Also...darn expensive.

They are pretty though, and fit nicely in the custom upstairs laundry room I built for the wife (which included a master closet expansion...we didn’t need that extra bedroom anyway).

Me ..’67 Camaro RS convertible, 327 automatic, black with gold stripe around the front. Sweet ride. A drunk driver took that one away from me.

While 8 months pregnant, my wife - in the middle of a drag race - announced we WOULD be selling the Camaro tomorrow - IF we survived.
We survived, I sold.

LOLOLOL. I’ve “out” of a washer/dryer since Aug 1! I got the washer last week, but it’s pretty useless without a dryer. I washed a load of jeans the day the washer came and dried them by hanging them over the front of the machine. They took two days to dry and are stiff as boards.

That has been my pet peeve since they first started selling the “new” washing machines — especially the front loaders on pedastals. There are millions of houses, all over the country, that have built in cabinets around their laundry room set ups. And then the washing machine people started making the machines in different sizes that don’t fit. Actually, I didn’t think it would last, but they are still doing it and I’v been complaining at least 10 years.

My situation is a little different. We were getting a new floor installed in the laundry room, kitchen, powder bath; and front entry hall.

All the appliances were new when we bought this house in 1987. The sellers were insistent that we take the machines at the time, so we did. About 3 weeks after moving in, I noticed something strange about how the washer (an oversized model) was installed. I looked closer and saw that in order to squeeze this 29” washer into a smaller space, someone had cut the ends of the counter off, removed the side of the coabinet, and ripped out the sheet rock down to the studs where all the plumbing comes in and out.

My husband said he’d fix it. That was 27 years ago! So, now he fixed it (which was a 2 week ordeal, fitting all the pieces in). In the mean time, I pointed out that my perfectly good washer was probably on its last legs and we should consider getting a new washer/dryer because we didn’t want to take the chance that the old one would fail and leak all over the new floor!

We bought a set of LGs and had them delivered. An hour after they were installed, they leaked all over the floor (which was still the old floor). I raised holy he!! with Best Buy and LG and sent them back. (In the mean time, Best Buy had taken my old machines). Then I ordered as set of Whirlpool Cabrios from HH Gregg. They kept changing the delivery date and then finally brought them out at 9:30 PM and they arrived all dented. We sent them back.

In the mean time, we found out that the leak all over the floor was from an outdoor water faucet that had sprung a leak over the winter. We hadn’t used it yet, but recently had a delivery of hydrangeas that are sitting in their pots waiting to be planted.

So, we went to Home Depot and re-ordered the LGs. I’ve only got the washer so far. The dryer comes next week. So, I’ve had to learn to use the laundromat, an experience I haven’t had since 1961. I have a bump on my head where a dryer door hit me, and I lost $6 in quarters in one of their machines.

But, things could be worse. We could be living in Iraq and be threatened with beheading by ISIS.
