One of the most successful aspects of the Yes campaign has been its ability to hide the economic, social and historical consequences of a vote for independence.
The choice for the people of Scotland has been framed by Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Alex Salmond as an opportunity to take revenge on an out of touch Westminster elite, a narrative which for several reasons has struck of chord with a significant portion of Scottish voters.
The centrepiece of the Yes campaign’s message is a three and a half minute video from Kirsty, who we are told will be born just in time to live in two different futures, one within the United Kingdom and one without.
The key question repeated throughout the video is: “Will I grow up in a Scotland where...?” followed by a string of doomsday scenarios where people have to pay for tuition fees, and weapons of mass destruction are tolerated.

Actually, the natural reaction of many English has indeed been to say, "Don't let the door hit your arse on the way out."
That said, national unity is quite a bit more than the sum of the parts and a ledger sheet.
I don't have a dog in this fight, but I can clearly see that the Scottish independence pols are looking to aggrandize themselves and enhance their power. They are devout socialists and hardly seek indepence of the individual Scot, they just want their own freedom to weild a heavier hand. The romantic Hollywood William Wallace they aren't.
Do they even have a proposed system of government or monetary system?
Hah! Perhaps that is exactly what they should do after this vote is complete.
Let’s see how well Scotland survives economically being mostly dependent on oil and natural gas production/export from the North Sea. And with their biggest bank, RBS, moving to England.

That said, independence will set off a chain reaction that must eventuate in a swing from socialism to capitalism - and years later progressively to socialism, as the USA has done.
Taking responsibility is the only way anyone or nation matures.

But we took the centralized government road in 1865 and now the only question left is which of two political elites get to run the country.

Scotland (and I am a NO voter btw) is a great country, which has produced an amazing amount of great men and women, inventions, culture, science, sport, literature.....

I was noting that minute size is not an impediment to statehood. No insult was intended.
An independent Scotland will have the GDP and population about equal to the U.S. state of Missouri or Wisconsin.
The remains of the UK might or might not remain a major player in the world, but Scotland would certainly not take on that role.
I would expect Scotland to take a place of import similar to Hungary, Portugal, and Denmark. That too, is not an insult, but a straight observation.
The cost of government would logically go up in Scotland, as the political infrastructure is more socialist than the rest of the UK and economies of scale would be lost, i.e. Scotland will need to man embassies, have new military infrastructure (if it has one), etc.
I’m still curious how citizenship will be determined. Dual citizenships? Its been done before, but many, many messy questions.

Just because I don’t like Scotland doesn’t make me a bigot. I have excellent grounds for not liking it. This is not a blind prejudice.
