Impressive. Euthanasia has gone full circle to become capital punishment.

This raises a very interesting question. If death row and ‘life term without possibility of parole’ prisoners in the US were polled, how many would opt for being euthanized?

In all fairness, there might have to be a minimum term in prison before they were eligible to be euthanized, say 10 years out of however many, but after that, with the permission of the board of pardons and parole (which typically reviews all death sentences, and might deny it in many cases), they could be turned off.

You have to admit, this would make a heck of a movie.

“Transfer” a novel by Jerry Furland described a policy called Modification Of Sentencing. The prison sentence that would ensure the criminal would never have a chance for parole could be modified at the prisoner’s request. MOS was a one time appeal, given two weeks in which the prisoner could consider his decision.

If the two weeks passed without a retraction of the request the prisoner would be given a one week period to eat, to drink, to have “spiritual counseling” conjugal visits, whatever entertainment requested, and a death gratuity paid to whomsoever the prisoner nominated to receive it.

At the end of the week the prisoner would be executed.

MOS’ing out was the slang for the inmates.

If they changed their minds during the two week period and elected not to MOS out they would never be allowed to choose to MOS out again.

Just saying... Furland nailed it years ago.
