BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The mother of slain teen Trayvon Martin will be part of a discussion at Lehigh University Tuesday.

As part of the University's MLK Committee, a "Rap Sessions' event discussion will be offered at 7 p.m. in Baker Hall.

The panel will feature Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, and will be moderated by hip hop artist and activist Jasari X.

Martin was a 17-year-old African-American high school student was fatally shot by a neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in February 2012 in a Sanford, Florida, neighborhood.

Zimmerman was acquitted of the crime in July 2013.

Other panelists at Tuesday night's discussion will include Carlito Rodriguez, award-winning writer/Producer of BET documentary 50 Shots on Police Brutality and Sean Bell; Michael Skolnik, political director for Russell Simmons/editor-in-chief of Globalgrind.com; Niaz Kazravi, NAACP National Director of Criminal Justice, and Bakari Kitwana, executive director of Rap Sessions.

According to the Lehigh University website, the MLK Committee provides programming related to social justice issues.

“Because of some of the incidents that took place on campus last year, we were all more aware of these issues,” said Tyrone Russell, co-chair of the MLK Committee and director of Lehigh’s Office of Multicultural Affairs.

“People may have been more likely to attend something, or at the very least, be more aware. And nationally, it seems that there was always something in the news that generated more interest. A student could watch a news story on CNN, and then go to a discussion about that same topic right here.”

Lloyd Steffen, associate professor of religion studies, University Chaplain and co-chair of the MLK Committee, said that a focus of this year’s work will be “reflecting on the kind of community we [Lehigh] want to be.”

“As recent events in Ferguson, Missouri, have demonstrated, this reflection is going on in our nation as well,” Steffen said. “The MLK committee is perhaps a small effort, but we are dedicated to holding up Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community, and we have been dedicated to initiating or supporting the many different ways education and learning can shape how we live and what we value."

Several more events are planned in the coming months.

Tuesday's event is free and open to the public. No ticket is required.

This woman flies more than an airline stewardess! What do you want to bet that she still has a full salary and benefits from her job with the Miami-Dade government, even though she's never there? Kind of a "poor man's Michelle Obama" as it were...

She’s only cashing in on her son’s demise.

Just my opinion.

She is now a permanent part of the professional Left’s traveling grievance show.

The professional left makes sure people who trash the US are well compensated for their efforts.

Hopefully she’ll tell them that the solution is for men to stay and raise their families. Hopefully she’ll tell them that thug culture kills souls and snuffs out lives. That media companies who have taught kids that the criminal life is authentic to black culture, have blood on their hands.

Hopefully she’ll have time to mention all that.

Self defense is not a crime.

It is when you’re “white” (which he is not, but let’s not go there) and your “victim” is a 13 year old carrying candy and watermelon juice.
