People hear about the offensive, controversial item.
Then they look on the website for it.
In the meantime they are browsing a website they may not have been to before.
Prhaps it offers 20% off any item for first-time visitors and thus a cost-free viral advertising campaign is born.
Few existing customers will boycott, and they may pick up many more.
