California School Changes Criticized Arab Mascot

A Southern California high school has changed its nickname from the Arabs to the Mighty Arabs and has adopted a logo with a nobler image, school officials announced Wednesday.

The Coachella Valley Unified School District governing board unanimously adopted the changes in a closed-session meeting Tuesday night after months of pressure from Arab-American anti-discrimination groups.

"Dealing with the mascot issue has gone worldwide," Superintendent Daryl Adams said, according to the Desert-Sun ( http://desert.sn/1lUE3AK ). "I'm glad to see that coming to an end."

Officials at Coachella Valley High School consulted with Arab-American groups in getting rid of the scowling, hook-nosed image in the old logo and adopting the more stoic face in the new one.

Abed Ayuoub of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee said the group fully supports the new mascot and image.

"We passed it around to experts and community members," Ayoub told the Desert-Sun. "We took our time to get the opinion of that logo, and it was overwhelmingly positive."

The Arab mascot has existed since the 1920s to recognize the desert region's reliance on date farming, a traditionally Middle Eastern crop.

The school had already abandoned the mascot costume that had imagery similar to the old logo, along with the belly dancing genie that appeared with him.

Why do folks outside of CA feel compelled to hurl generalizations? Does it make you feel “special” somehow?

CA is just like every other state that is enacting PC directives all across the country...nothing special here.

“you can expect to maybe hear from one”

Did I say something wrong or untrue?

“Does it make you feel “special” somehow?”

Does living in a liberal/communist dominant state make you
feel “special” somehow?

Honestly I don’t like my state being the dumping ground for
California, Mexico and the northeastern communist blocks
excess liberal vagabonds and bumms. If you fit into any of
those categories then yes I’m talking about you.

So you wanna double down on stupid, ok sport...nothing like exacerbating an already tense situation.

Not going to explain or offer up anything to you...you don’t like getting a helping of what you’re trying to dish out...call the wahhmbulance and see if you can get someone who cares.

More PC idiocy for you holier than thou a-holes on FR...

So why don’t you go and slam some SC FReepers and see if you can’t make some more “friends”?

“Did I say something wrong or untrue?”

Houston, the city of welfare queens, drug addicts, and
libtards.

Did I say something wrong or untrue?

Besides your blanket comments about CA did you consider
the fact that not all Arabs are Muslim? As far as you
know that part of California could be inhabited by many good
Christian Arab Americans.

“Houston, the city of welfare queens, drug addicts, and
libtards.”

That’s not the half of it. It’s worse than that. It’s
becoming the home base of the homosexual agenda. It’s
true and I’m not going to take it personally. You shouldn’t
take comments about your state being what it is personally either.
Unless
of course your part of the problem. About 10% of the people
that I do regular business with are native Texans, the rest
all come from some failed state or another. And just
like Mexicans, most vote for the same type of politicians
they ran away from.

Grow up and quit whining, It’s not about you.

“Christian Arab Americans” Sure. Now, any criticism of
California is racist. Sound familiar?

All your generalizations make you out to be a fool
or and/or an idiot. There are very few things that
are all one thing or all another. In order to attract
positive strokes from other haters you just have to
include the whole state of CA in your comment. That is
the way of a simpleton. Is that you? The one doing
the whining is you. You whine about California every
chance you get, don’t you?

"That’s California for you."

This was in your original comment...a gross generalization...one of countless thousands hurled by FReepers over the years without regard to who it smears...

I'm not a native of CA, nor do I plan to remain...however, for now, it's my home. Hurling insults about my home in a manner that I detest and resent is going to get a response...if you have target, hit it...using a "nuke" to make your point is lazy.

For the record...I don't know the last time I took the time, opportunity, or even sadistic pleasure to rub Texas' nose in the pile of $hit whenever something stupid occurred there...you and countless other FReepers might do well to consider that. It's called civility.

“All your generalizations make you out to be a fool
or and/or an idiot.”

You just cant help it can you.
Maybe I should call you a waaambulance.
I made a point, you took it personally, that’s your
problem. Grow up and stop resorting to name calling
when you put your foot in your mouth.
Here’s a “generalization” for
you specifically. You are the typical Californian.
You just don’t get it.

“haters” That’s liberal speak.

Generalizing and talking smack out you backside, ansel,
that is real liberal speak. Like you’ve been told, liberal
type dumb stuff happens all over the country everyday
including in your own back yard. When it has a CA zip code
you bring the universal hate. In truth you envy the climate
and beauty of California and detest the sh!thole where you
have to reside. Otherwise you wouldn’t have the Cali
fixation. Grow up and learn that the enemy is liberal
ideology not any one state.

“talking smack, you backside, ansel, you envy,”

You sure you don’t want a waambulance for your inferiority
complex?

“the enemy is liberal
ideology not any one state.”

Yea and your state is eat up with it. The problem here is
the liberalism in California was self imposed by its own residents
and like a puss filled cold sore it has popped
and is infecting everything around it. And now that
California is a failing liberal state it is exporting it’s
own home grown “liberal ideology” to the more responsible
conservative states. I don’t think you had anything to do
with it but you do need to address that inferiority
complex. “envy the climate and beauty of California”
Oh please, Californians are moving to Texas in droves,
faster than the wetbacks. Not to many Texans are moving
to the left coast. Nobody really wants to. Maybe they are leaving because
most of the residents are like you, argumentative and pointless, who knows.
You want to take that personally as well go ahead. Actually
it kinda was.

“detest the sh!thole where you
have to reside.”
Your right, It’s almost as bad as LA here where I’m at.
But I can make a living here and rents cheap.

Learn a little discretion in your rants about something
you know nothing about and you will get no argument from me,
ansel. Stuck in LA because they don’t use “craftsmen” in
Texas? Bwaaaaahahaha! That is funny! Sounds like you need
the waaahhbulance to take you home, dude! (Liberal speak).
Lone Star state going gangbusters w/out you while you
spend your spare time slamming a place you know nothing
about except what you see on libtard TV and reading the papers. Can I send you some $ to help?

BTW liberal politics was transferred to CA thru
drastic population growth. Good luck.

“Learn a little discretion”

OK. How about this. California sucks, you know it, and you
don’t like to be grouped in with all the sucky people that
surrounds you. No problem. You shouldn’t be offended if
you had nothing to do with your fine and beautiful state
going down the liberal craphole. However, you seem to have
worked yourself into a twitter to the point you are actually
typing your maniacal laugh, “Bwaaaaahahaha!”. Tell me why
does it bother you? Why does my concern for my state going
down the same craphole, in spite of the great example your
state previously made, bother you. Your in a state that was
once and in some aspects still a great state but you feel
you’ve lost that high and mighty, nose in the air status
and your taking any criticism personally. You shouldn’t.
All it does is make you sound like a Canadian.

But hay “That’s California for you”. Ay?

I don’t know what an “ansel” is but here in the great
mostly conservative state of Texas we have an old saying,
“It takes one to know one” Good luck.

“California sucks”

Well, no it doesn’t but I will grant that the dominant
political culture does suck, not the state as a whole.
Too many millions of good conservative Californians to make
such a generalization. Acknowledge that fact and I have
little, if any, problem w/ what you state. The voters of
this state passed Prop 187, an initiative which was even
opposed by a Texas Governor named GW Bush because it
was seen as too harsh on illegal aliens. And, even tho’
Swartzenrino was a big dud the voters recalled the
Demo Governor who preceded him.

“twitter”

Really? You know good and well stupid liberal stunts
happen all over this nation on a regular basis and
most of them have nothing to do w/California. Yet,
when something happens here that offends your
sensibilities you link it to the whole state. I would
call that working “yourself into a twitter”.

But, you do need to be concerned about your state
“going down the same craphole” not because of what
does or doesn’t happen in CA but because of your
own governor. Bringing tons of jobs to your state
is great, over populating with newbies....not so
much. With great population growth comes activist
liberals and you won’t even know it until too late.
There is a lot to learn from conservative Californians
if you would tip your hat a little instead of
treating us like the liberal scum who have moved here
and taken over.

“Your (you’re)in a state that was once and in some
respects still a great state....”

Ah, since we have had, and still have some redeeming
qualities we can talk. I’ll accept that!

“....but you feel you’ve lost that high and mighty,
nose in the air status....”

No, not that. If you read my bio page you will see that
I contend that Hollywood types and other transplants have
created an image which real natives have never really
understood. Whatever I have posted to you about the
beauty of California was to attempt to uncover just how
much of this state you have seen for yourself. I would
not charge you with a little bit of jealousy here but
others might see it differently.

As to taking criticism personally, there is legit
criticism and just plain horsesh!t attacks. Often
I agree or learn from the criticism.

“ansel”

That is a person who is well meaning but has some
serious drawbacks. They fancy themselves as sheepdogs
who quietly protect the ignorant flock and keep to
themselves, mostly. In fact, they are more like Summer
camp counselors. They define the activities and put
everyone into groups sometimes without thinking
things through. They are not as all-knowing as they
think and they believe that those who do not completely
agree with them must be on the other side. Yes, I
identified you as ansel but I might have been a bit
hasty.
