BARKLEY: I don't believe that because listen we spank kids in the South. I think the question about did Adrian Peterson go overboard. But listen Jim we all grew up in different environments. Listen, every black parent in my neighborhood in the South would be in trouble or in jail under those circumstances.
BARKLEY: Oh yeah, I got beat with switches. First of all, I don't like the term, when the media talks about it and somebody just said on television, beating a child. Listen –

BARKLEY: Well, we call it spanking or whooping our kids. ROME: If I see open wounds and bruises throughout a body that is a beating.
BARKLEY: Sure. Those pictures are disturbing. I think Adrian said he went overboard. But as far as being from the South, we all spanked our kids. I got spanked, me and my two brothers. ROME: Again Chuck, not now. 1964 is one thing, 2014 is another.
ARKLEY: And that’s fair. I totally agree with that. Maybe we need to rethink it but I think we have to really be careful trying to teach other parents how to discipline their kids. That’s a very fine line.

Exactly.
Agreed—it’s an issue of class, culture, and limited intelligence. Society needs to intervene, ideally from the church and other civic institutions, but when that fails, as in this case, the law needs to get involved. Even children have basic rights.
There’s no excuse for beating a child that way.
You can’t discipline a child if you lose control.
Some kids only respond to spankings. Some kids won’t respond to being “grounded.” For some kids spanking and grounding won’t work but will have a melt down if you tell them they disappointed you.
The key is knowing what works with the kid.
If you spank your kids, it must always be at a time well after the behavior that called for the spanking.
Punishment must be applied swiftly enough to be associated with the bad behavior.

There was an old story of father who sent his son to cut his own switch from a tree. To the father’s surprise the boy comes back with a twig.

At the other end of the spectrum, the well off could also use more moral instruction. Affluenza is a real condition. Some parents believe loving their child means giving them everything they ask for and allowing them to do whatever they want.
Their children grow up unrealistically believing that the world was designed just for them and when they are confronted with the real world, they find things aren’t the way they were at home. Many of these more well off children find the world so difficult that they decide to end their lives. If they had received some painful discipline from their loving parents when they were younger, perhaps the experience of real world would not have seemed so cruel.
I have nothing to say against Adrian Peterson. I don’t know the situation, or what the child did to deserve the punishment. I do know that even younger kids deserved hard discipline and I also know different types of switches need more or less force to leave marks.
My father used a switch off of a bush that had extremely pliable branches. It was so pliable it was more like a whip than a stick. All you had to do was tap someone with it and it left red marks like the ones on Peterson’s child. People speculating about the force Peterson used seem to know a lot more about the events involved than I’ve seen reported.
Some lower income parents use abusive disciple practices on their children and some higher income people use abusive non discipline on their children. Both are bad for society.
Maybe in the past, before the 1970s. I had a best friend in high school, black, and he was scared to death of getting punished by his dad. He and his two brothers kept out of trouble in fear of getting whipped with a belt. They turned out just fine. Then again, they were brought up middle class with good morals and discipline.
The black community by far uses the most corporal punishment—and they raise kids who do far more crime. I don’t think that association backs your argument.
In my job I interact with teens every day. You can tell those who are undisciplined. They commit the most crime.
I know a certain violent, foul mouthed, young lady in the care of passive grandparents. I spoke with the grandfather and he said he “tried” to discipline her and she told him to “shut up.”

Pending accuracy, these pics are of week old wounds. There’s no excuse to deliver this type of assault on a 4 yr. old child.
Even though I got the switch, spoon, and belt, my parents never drew blood nor delivered my discipline in a rage. It was a serious and controlled procedure.
Albeit extraordinary, if this child would have had the wherewithal to handle a firemarm and planted one in AP’s head, it would be simple self defense.
P.S. This kid will be a perfect participant in the knockout game later in life because his bloody beatings weren’t a big deal.
Peterson lost a child to an abusive boyfriend of his baby mamma just a year ago and then he beats his kid?
I got news for ya, alot of WHITE parents would be in jail too.
Hell, my Mama made me go pick my own switch.
But Adrian P. did go too far, from what I’ve heard the kid was FOUR and he left marks.
Guy needs to learn how to do it right.
My Mama could teach him.
A couple hours later gives them time to stew on whats coming. And keeps you from lashing out in anger instead of as discipline.
