Was the $1 TRILLION spent on the Dept. of Homeland Security a total waste or only a partial one?

I have always hated the term “homeland security.” What are we part of Bismark’s Germany? That aside the name of the agency isn’t the only thing wrong with the agency. There’s the whole “that it exists at all” thing.

Don’t misconstrue what I am saying as a belief that terrorism isn’t a legitimate threat. I think that it is. I actually buy that we are in a protracted battle, but that it is a low grade one with periodic flare-ups. Terrorism is not an existential threat to the USA. (The reaction to terrorism may be however.) The threat of a catastrophic attack, God forbid, is nothing for instance compared to the threat we lived under with the Soviet Union. Not even close.

And yet we seem as a society to have lost our minds and thrown the Constitution out of the window in the wake of September 11th 2001.

Sure it can be argued that the Soviets were rational actors and terrorists tend not to be rational (at least from our perspective.) But with the Soviet Union we were talking about Armageddon. That is not the threat we live under now.

If we got through the Cold War without trashing everything this country stands for and without erecting a ubiquitous police state, why did we so quickly capitulate when we were attacked by a small band of terrorists?

I think this is a question which deserves to be answered. And needs to be. $1 trillion is a hell of a lot of money.

Besides the TSA and the DHS bureaucracy (which is huge), the enforcement organizations of DHS are legacy components from Treasury and Justice.

DHS = huge affirmative action boondoggle. Under Obama we got that porky lesbian Janet “from another planet” Napolitano/ Now we have Jeh Johnson an incompetent Black man or else a saboteur. Probably sabotage. I have heard all his lies and excuses as to why the Mexican border is open and no one gets deported

To me, it conjures up pictures of Eric Ambler’s “Ministry of the Interior.”

Working for TSA is one big power trip for those who have a grievance against regular Americans or the very concept of America.

Cross them (even accidentally, inadvertently, no matter) and they can ruin your day or life with impunity. Airport security = gauntlet of short-fused goons.

Just remember we all need to thank that really great conservative George Bush for DHS and for the massive prescription drug benefit. Really great conservative programs and ideas.

The DH was hi jacked by the Obama admin as was many other things never intended to be used against citizens.

As a reminder...the State Bureaus of Investigation, FBI, DEA, ATF, and other departments were NOT sharing information because they did not want other bureaus to get credit for solving the crime. In fact, 9/11 and other attacks would have been solved pre event if a central agency had all the known facts from each agency...that was the original purpose Bush backed the creation of the DHS.

When the Obama Democrats came on board, it became a way to use a federal agency and that much intelligence to bully their way with citizens.

It is not the creation of the DHS that was the problem, it is the people who hi jacked it...period. Everything from NSA to the lowest police department has been hi jacked to serve a purpose, and instead of looking at one agency we need to look at the overall picture and it’s not looking too good right now.

"...homeland security is the new Gestapo..."

You nailed it. Every dollar given to DHS goes to abridge or remove the rights of Americans.

I consider them the enemy. Every single DHS worker serves the ultimate goal of destroying freedom, and thus they are the enemy of all freedom-loving peoples.

My friend, Congressman Paul Gosar told me this story. He called Homeland Security to come to his office in Washington to discuss the border and the problems that were happening in our home state, Arizona. He told me nine Six Homeland Security officers came to his office... FULLY ARMED.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

One of the lesser stories which got thrown around in DC around 2011....was a budget analyst who arrived at a certain HS division and started to analyze why they had around 300 leased vehicles for roughly 350 employees.

This had started out around the 2005/2006 period, when this division was created, and they started to certify the need for various members of the group to have a vehicle...which they naturally drove home nightly....and they’d be able to react to any emergency quickly there in the nearby area (Boston, NY City, Philly, DC, etc).

Month after month, they certified more and more of the employees to have this leased vehicle. This also included the gas card, so they basically didn’t pay anything for the fuel they used....driving to and from work.

So the analyst put this up on the board, and asked the director of the division....how and why this was accepted, and the guy couldn’t answer the question. So, almost overnight, just about every single guy in the division lost his leased vehicle. But here’s the thing...they had signed agreements and still had to honor the monthly charges until the lease ran out. So the garage in the building suddenly was overpacked because they had sitting leased gov’t vehicles, and the normal cars that their employees had to drive into DC with.

Another unneeded expansion of the Executive Branch to create jobs for political friends just like many more programs in that era. It quickly became as obnoxious of an agency as all the rest. Obama and friends got to make it more so and use it against law abiding citizens for political agenda.

When posters protested the formation of DHS and other bad ideas they got doses of the "cult" saying "your either with us or the terrorist" crap. There was no reasoning with them nor would they listen to well reasoned warnings.

2001-2006 can only go down in history as the biggest waste of opportunity to turn our nation around in history. That can be blamed squarely on the GOP-E alone and their enabling of the Liberal agendas. They stood with the DEM's. They still do today. Sad to say some poster still support the GOP-E.

Does the name Alberto Gonzales mean anything to you? He was USAG under W. He wanted databases of citizens "LAWFULL" activities. Well we have them. The department was indeed founded to be used against us and even George W Stooge wasn't naive enough to think it wouldn't. Notice how quiet he's been?

George Bush, June 2002, but the plan or suggestion was in place before 9/11/2001. See The U.S. Commission on National Security/21st Century (USCNS/21), also known as the Hart-Rudman Task Force on Homeland Security, chartered by Secretary of Defense William Cohen in 1998, for more.

Bush could have stopped it. But hey why waste an opportunity to appoint a political crony to a position. Bush will eventually go down in history as Bill Clinton term three and four minus the Clinton scandals.

Sounds like money well spent. By Washington standards.

The even bigger story is, if all those employees had stayed home, or in a bar in Bimini, no one would have missed any one of them.

DHS was created for the right reasons, but is run by wrong people. That has happened a lot in past two decades, and in past Administrations as well.

The lack of information sharing among police, state bureaus of investiagion, FBI, ATF, DEA arm of FBI, CIA, and others allowed crimes to go unsolved. The DHS was to bring those agencies together to share tips and information after it was found sharing might have stopped 9/11.

Everyone having a piece of the puzzle but no one putting the pieces together! Some decisions were wrong, like putting FEMA under that umbrella. Like the left making it their punishment for Tea Party members or other conservative groups.

The concept was good, but the use of it has been bad.

I see the end result that's enough for me. It was a bad idea which has yielded way beyond bad results and abuses much like TSA. Every Act, every Bill, before being voted on the question should be asked what will next administration do with the program. How can it be used as a tool of Tyranny? What can be written in to prevent it? That is why it was a bad idea. No one is doing this. You made my argument for me here

That said some of the worst legislation since the days of LBJ was passed under GW Bush's term with a two house GOP majority. Ted Kennedy could not have ever hoped to inflict as much damage unless the useful GOP-E FOOLS & IDIOTS had helped all his dreams come true.

Note also this was not the same ones who were in control of the party in 1994-95 who offered us Contract with America and smaller government. No indeed a Coup in the party took place.

Riddle me this. What does Bill Paxon and John Boehner have in common in their relationship toward Newt? There are two GOP's and one faction is as evil & wrong in agenda as the DEMs. Yet many still defend them even in FR. The DEMs we know are basically evil. The GOP for their own decided price decided to join them. Look around you. Who is leading congress? Who is badmouthed by GOP-E senators in the senate trying to stop this mess? The few left who are Patriots that's who.
