Think tank proposes ‘assault weapon permits’ in place of bans (Molon Labe!)

With the 20th anniversary of the original 1994 Assault Weapon Ban as perspective, a noted liberal think tank is suggesting a number of moves to replace the once-standard tactic.

This comes as the Center for American Progress, referred to by Time as “Obama’s Idea Factory,” released a 28-page report Friday analyzing policy options for regulating firearms with the President Clinton-era federal Assault Weapons Ban now two decades in the rearview.

Constitutional rights do not require permits.

Jerks in The Tank for leftist scum, not a "Think Tank".

Even the NYT has finally slipped up and admitted there's no such thing as an "assault weapon" so unless they're going to make AR15s with a three round burst selector legal with such a permit there are no weapons for sale to civilians that such a permit would apply to.

Should any such plan ever come to fruition, 5 simple words.

Lie, Defy, Do not comply!

You issue permits to exercise privileges. Rights are not a matter of permission.

This way, after you’ve made the investment in the permit and the firearms they can yank the permit and seize the weapons whenever they want.

Never trust any politician who will not trust you with a gun.

Anyone who passed the NICS background check already has their ‘permit’.

Finally, in a new tactic, the paper’s authors suggest that Congress mandate that individuals seeking a gun classified as an assault weapon first obtain a permit.

They still can't quite get the true definition of an assault weapon.

How about we just remove all these silly unconstitutional gun laws and go after criminals instead?

This also deserves posting fro the article:

Besides the recommendation for increased background checks, the study also advocates restricting interstate long arm sales to the same degree that handgun sales currently are, and that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms require virtually all sales of multiple rifle be reported. In a nod to current events, the authors’ calls for a restriction on the use of automatic weapons by those under 16 and that 3D printer users seeking to manufacturer firearms be required to first secure a federal firearms license.

They still can't quite get the true definition of an assault weapon.

They don't want to. The idea is to get people to agree to "reasonable regulations" of "assault weapons" first. Then they'll decide what an "assault weapon" is, and what's "reasonable".

Let’s not overlook the obvious: Although you will be able to buy an “assault weapon”, it will be damn-near impossible to get a permit!

NEVER trust these bastards!!!

Our side needs to appreciate & adopt the “aim beyond your goal” tactic the Left is so good at. They aim for an AWB, will settle for AW licensing (probably a la NFA) as that squeezes out most owners & interest. We need to counter by demanding full repeal of NFA and 922(o), ‘settling’ for ending the ‘86 MG ban (back to $200 tax NFA status) and dropping suppressors from NFA completely.

I kind of like that idea. But I don’t trust them(both sides) with that.

I was waiting for them to make semiautos mfa items...looks like I don’t have to wait any more.

Exactly! I already have an “assault weapon permit”. It’s the 2nd Amendment.

They already put a permit process in place for assault weapons. You have to get a class 3 stamp from the BATF to buy a full auto firearm. AR-15 pattern rifles are not full auto nor select fire, hence, not “assault weapons” so the whole idea of a permit for what is already perfectly legal is a non-starter.

And the sad part is that the probably of repealing the NFA is probably low as even those who are supporters of the 2A may have investments in full auto guns at 20K and up and if the NFA act is repealed their investments will drop precipitously.

So the lesson here is NO NEW LAWS!
