NBC 4 ^ | Sep 12, 2014 | Sam Schulz

An arrest warrant was issued Friday in Texas for Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson after he was indicted on a child abuse charge for using a branch to spank his son. He won't play in Sunday's game against the New England Patriots.

The Vikings said they had deactivated Peterson for Sunday's game Friday evening, just after his lawyer and the Montgomery County sheriff's office confirmed he was

Read Adrian Peterson's lawyer Rusty Hardin's statement in full below:

Adrian Peterson has been informed that he was indicted by a grand jury in Montgomery County, Texas for Injury to a Child. The charged conduct involves using a switch to spank his son. This indictment follows Adrian’s full cooperation with authorities who have been looking into this matter. Adrian is a loving father who used his judgment as a parent to discipline his son. He used the same kind of discipline with his child that he experienced as a child growing up in east Texas. Adrian has never hidden from what happened. He has cooperated fully with authorities and voluntarily testified before the grand jury for several hours. Adrian will address the charges with the same respect and responsiveness he has brought to this inquiry from its beginning. It is important to remember that Adrian never intended to harm his son and deeply regrets the unintentional injury.

Time outs do not work with many kids. I had two who LOVED time-outs. They are also ineffective with young kids who do not link things thru time.

Spanking a 12 year old makes no sense to me. But it can work great with a 2 year old.

I doubt you regularly hit adults to make them do what you want. You likely do what the scriptures indicate: use a logical convincing argument or turn the other cheek.

If you fail to correct a child when it endangers itself or others. You fail.

For all of human society, getting spanked for failure is a natural consequence.

You can deny that all you want, but it ain't so.

“A child is not a dog. Whacking isn’t a natural consequence at all...Our prisons are full of kids whose parents hit them. It doesn’t work.”

Dogs are smarter than some young kids...but young kids and dogs and horses all respond well to immediate, proportionate physical punishment.

I’ve known a great many successful people who were spanked and belted. The idea that it causes folks to end up in prison is silly.

Sure uncontrolled rage and anger directed at a child is a bad way to discipline. If voice commands and time outs work to apply discipline for correction then great however don’t you think there are times when a measured administering of a butt smacking is necessary especially for unruly young male children? A little pain for greater gain.

I have had success with hundreds of children whose parents said they were out of control or wouldn’t listen. How did you administer time outs? Were you obviously angry? Did you determine the length of time out or did the child? Were your expectations totally clear and confirmed by the child? If you’re totally clear about what behaviors are expected and which will receive your attention time outs work every time.

One of my favorite videos shows a mom telling her young son not to ride his tricycle to the corner. He does it repeatedly despite being told not to go to the corner. Eventually the mom is about to whack him when he asks, “Mommy, what’s a corner?”

I’ve never needed to punish a child with hitting of any kind. Sometimes a child needs to be stopped physically, but only by using the minimum necessary force. I’m thinking of when their action will lead directly to serious injury or death.

Do something really stupid around me, and I'll stop it in a heartbeat. I may feel bad afterwards, but sweep me with a weapon or remove a lock-out tag and see what happens.

Physical punishment matters early on (or later on, to those in arrested development).

No confusion, period. My parents loved me and disciplined me by spanking when necessary. It all fit together as one.

Peterson allegedly sent text messages to the child’s mother saying he “felt bad” because....” he struck the kid in the testicles”.....

That’s going too far and much more than switching a kid.

I never stated that a spanked child will end up in prison. Plenty of FReepers were spanked, including me, and never went to prison or jail or even arrested.

Spanking simply doesn’t work. What’s really happening is other good parenting interventions that overcome the harm spanking does.

Perhaps but was it a one time event for AP? Was the kid hit in the head too? Is there child abuse in this society? Absolutely! Does that mean we throw out physical discipline like spanking when done in controlled measures of love? Absolutely not.

I believe that this is what needs to be adjudicated. I found a similarity of this story to Zimmerman, whereas the pictures of his injuries were purposefully withheld to sway public opinion. The pics were finally shown to back up the claims of self-defense. Likewise, the pics in this incident reveal more information that appears to expose that this may not be a simple occasion of discipline with a benign "switch." Without the visual, it's an attempt to demonize normal and proper parental disciplinary actions.

Why not unruly young female children? If you want to intervene in a way that doesn’t work, then go ahead and spank. Have you ever seen a happy parent spank?

Spanking is a result of parental failure at self-control and parental frustration.

Meh... I had thin skin as a kid. What would have left bloody welts back then today would leave a rosy glow.

“Taught me to levitate like Thurston the Great.
I could walk on the ceiling when daddy had a switch.”

Now that’s funny right there! I was the same way when my mom grabbed her belt!

Have you ever seen a happy parent spank?

Yes. And the kid didn't do that thing in the future.

One simple spanking, and the entire future of the kid changed.

my father had his belt, my mother had this rubber sole from a boot that was a little flexable, but not much....

of course we girls never really got the belt...

and the very worse I got was actually my mother slapping my face when I was 14 for mouthing off....that hurt my pride more than anything....

I hope Peterson gets fair justice...leaving the welts was over the line, but I applaud a strong daddy....I hope that he just lost control in this one instance and that it had never happened before...

Did you ever define punishment, per you, since you abandoned the dictionary?
