NFL: 3 in 10 Ex-Players Face Alzheimer's, Dementia
ABC News ^ | September 12, 2014 | By MARYCLAIRE DALE

The NFL believes that nearly three in 10 former players will develop debilitating brain conditions, and that they will be stricken earlier and twice as often as the general population.

The disclosure Friday comes in data the league prepared for its proposed $765 million settlement of thousands of concussion lawsuits.

Both the league and players' lawyers estimate that 28 percent of the retirees will develop Alzheimer's disease, moderate dementia or more serious neurological problems.

That would represent nearly 6,000 of the 19,000 living former players. Dozens of them could develop Lou Gehrig's or Parkinson's disease.

It boils down to their desire to control every facet of life:

Yes! Rush was very eloquent on this today. The sports journalists have become politically correct propagandists/re-educators who would make Pol Pot grin with satisfaction. I do not tune into sports to be lectured about wife abuse. I tune in for entertainment. If Rice committed a crime, throw him in jail. The NFL has nothing to do with his personal problems.

Yes. People think that if you reject all this BS, you support wife-beating thugs.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

And the protective equipment was much inferior to what is used today.

maybe nail on head there. FRiend..

Yesterday's rather minimal "protective equipment" has become today's offensive weaponry.

Saw many offensive uses of the helmet last time I made it through an NFL TV session. The refs seem very concerned with "Pass interference," but seem to beletting this go. The noise alone has to be telling us something. Play seems a bit dirtier?

All I can say is that I had the impression that he really meant it.

I don’t remember the exact words or context but I’m pretty sure he meant it to be heard. I just found this from an interview in 2012.

I didn’t know Phyllis’ take on this. She’s one of my favorites also.

One again, it seems to me she has a very clear head on an issue.

Met her one time in an elevator. Just passing in the night...

It was a big deal to me. I really like her.

Did they have rheumatoid arthritis? Just wondering because there was a new study with a correlation. My g-mom had both, and I have the arthritis. My aunt (her daughter) has alzheimers but I haven’t asked if she also had the arthritis.

1/3 of epilepsy can be controlled with a high fat diet. Could be an influence.

I’ll believe this when I see Joe Montana, John Elway, and Steve Young knocking off liquor stores and beating their wives.

The NFL pulls in billions—EVERY year. Giving back 5% (figured over 10 years) to make this all go away is a no-brainer. That’s why the NFL is playing ball.

She hasn’t said anything about this particular thing that I have heard of.

But from recently taking in her book “Feminist Fantasies”, it is pretty clear to me she would see the attacks on American football as just another chapter in the battle by the feminists against men.

Arthritis, yes. The dr told us it isn’t hereditary, but a person is more likely to get it if it is in the family. I would call that hereditary!

That is one reason that I am not convinced about the head injury angle.

The brain is so complicated I wouldn’t rule out anything. What if playing football for 10 years BEFORE going pro causes minute damage that is repeated.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune system gone haywire. Also want to ask another question...Did those who developed arthritis and Alzheimer’s suffer under stress for any length of time? Stress triggers the immune system. Mine kicked in during my son’s deployment.

My mom lived with high stress non stop. Six kids and running a family business with my dad. Made me want to go to work for someone else!

I should get grant and do a study that will actually help someone. Also, another theory I have...Did your mom suffer stress during her pregnancy and did any of the children who were carried at the time, later develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
