NFL: 3 in 10 Ex-Players Face Alzheimer's, Dementia
ABC News ^ | September 12, 2014 | By MARYCLAIRE DALE

The NFL believes that nearly three in 10 former players will develop debilitating brain conditions, and that they will be stricken earlier and twice as often as the general population.

The disclosure Friday comes in data the league prepared for its proposed $765 million settlement of thousands of concussion lawsuits.

Both the league and players' lawyers estimate that 28 percent of the retirees will develop Alzheimer's disease, moderate dementia or more serious neurological problems.

That would represent nearly 6,000 of the 19,000 living former players. Dozens of them could develop Lou Gehrig's or Parkinson's disease.

1. Kill the NFL - that dirty, wealthy corporate leech!

2. Get rid of football - it turns boys into healthy, normal-aggressive, strong bodied youths. We must have weak willed, weak bodied men and boys so fascist/commies can take over more easily.

3. Bring in soccer - that beautiful European game in which there are very few winners and, therefore, is completely un-American.

I agree with that concept. ADS is one area where I think they spread the net far and wide, to capture more brilliant little boys before they do something that changes the world.

It would be interesting to know if Albert Einstein had ants in his pants as a boy. Imagine what could have been lost if he had been subject to today’s Orwellian planers.

That’s true too. That had come to my mind a while back when discussing this issue. It has a lot of impact on it, no doubt.

"...Football has a lot of enemies in the Left because they see it as an old throw-back to militaristic mindset..."

Anything masculine that women cannot participate in must be attacked, ridiculed, degraded, and eliminated. It is a direct offshoot of feminism. And football is pretty much the epitome of an activity that women cannot enter, unless they take massive doses of hormones and steroids, or they defang the game to the point it is like flag football, which they are trying to do.

Unfortunately, they are doing the same thing with the military. I am irritated and resent it with football, but I am aghast, angry and outraged at what they have done in the military.

I’m very sympathetic to your position here. I agree with your take on it.

In fact, yours and other posts on the subject raise the underlying reasons why I stand up and object to what is going on here. Why would I defend a sport that was ravaging it’s players? I don’t wish an owner to capitalize off the destruction of his players.

I do object to the Left trying to destroy this sport. I’m not going to play into that unless they prove to me that football players have a significantly higher incidence of Alzheimer’s than the general public.

I don’t believe that is the case. If it were, men would be the ones most affected. They would have the most incidents of Alzheimer’s.

Instead 66% of the incidents involve women.

The sport is being taken down by idiots, and even some on our side are buying into what the Left and Media are trying to pull off.

Yeah, without football, those professional players would all have become Rhodes scholars and brain surgeons.

They had a chance to get out of the ghetto and make huge bucks for themselves and their families. That most of them blew it is no one’s fault but their own. Certainly not the NFL that gave these people a chance to get out of the hellhole ghetto.

If the NFL itself admits that players will get early dementia twice as often as the general population, then players probably develop dementia four times as often as the general population.

World on fire. Ebola going global. MSM wants to talk about the NFL.

The US Senate wants to talk about the NFL.

Well that would be a good argument, unless you imagined sitting in front of an all black jury of 300 pound women.

You’d come out of court with less than three cents in your pocket, and the jury determining the incidents were 42 times the general population. Never-mind the plaintiff only claimed twice the incidences.

The root cause of ALS and Parkinson’s is unknown. There seems to be a genetic predisposition for Parkinson’s, and repeated blows to the head, as in boxing, can cause a Parkinson’s-type neuromuscular syndrome, but as of now, the cause of the disappearance of dopaminergic cells in Parkinson’s and the spinal motor neurons in ALS is unknown. Blows to the head don’t seem to be connected with ALS.

Do you know if Bradshaw intentionally said that so the audience would hear it, or did he say that thinking the mike was off?

Bring in soccer

That's not going to do it. Lots of medical testing ties traumatic brain injury to playing soccer for a decade or more. Players average six to twelve headers a game, with the ball going 50 miles per hour or more. Players head the ball 30 times per practice.

Medical researchers call the blows 'sub-concussive,' but have determined that the number of sub-concussive blows result in the same traumatic brain injury and cognitive issues as individuals who have received several concussions.

Lou Gehrig did not have Lou Gehrig’s disease. Just want to clear this up.

Back when football players were 5’10”-6’2”and 180-220 pounds, and not propelling themselves into each other quite as fast, the impact of the collisions was less.

And the protective equipment was much inferior to what is used today.

The game is probably more dangerous now, but all the attention to possible concussions and the required protocols today significantly increased the number of diagnoses. Many diseases and conditions become more prominent once they receive far more attention and diagnostic emphasis.

A lot of players played through minor concussions in the past, which is readily admitted by those who have been around the game a few decades.

Don’t you understand? The Left doesn’t care if men end up with all the cognitive intelligence of Stan Laurel. They care about getting rid of everything that is American. Therefore, soccer is the way of the future. Wake up.

I was told a few years ago from medical professionals that within 12 years there will be no neurological disease that cannot be cured. They said that with a high degree of confidence.

I don’t know if it has anything to do with stem cell reaseach or not but if true, it is quite exciting.

Hopefully the game of football will still be around by then.

One of my “heroes” in life (as seen on my FreepPage) is Phyllis Schlafly. She has been at the forefront of opposing this stupidity since the 1970’s, and after reading, watching, and listening to her, it is clear that she would see this as having its roots in the feminist left, which the media is clearly approving of and sympathetic to.
