Attacking Syria may entangle US in rebel rivalries

BEIRUT (AP) -- In expanding its airstrikes into Syria against Islamic State extremists, the U.S. could find itself entangled in a morass of jihadis, rebel rivalries and religious hatred.

Unlike Iraq, the U.S. has no firm allies inside Syria to take over areas if fighters from the Islamic State group are pushed back. Unless the West decisively backs the outgunned moderate rebels, it risks the unintended consequence of prolonging the widely discredited rule of President Bashar Assad.

President Barack Obama said Wednesday that in the fight against the Islamic State group, the U.S. "cannot rely on an Assad regime that terrorizes its own people - a regime that will never regain the legitimacy it has lost."

"Instead, we must strengthen the opposition as the best counterweight to extremists like ISIL, while pursuing the political solution necessary to solve Syria's crisis once and for all," Obama said, referring to the Islamic State group by one of its acronyms.

But it's a lot more complicated.

How about we just nuke the lot of them and be done with it for the next 500 years or so.

All of this, plus the fact that Russia has signaled that it will treat an incursion into Syria as an act of aggression, were known by Barry before he gave the speech last night.

Proof positive that he really has no intention of taking any meaningful action against the Islamic terrorists in Syria.

What a lying sack-of-crap.

If we back another set of “moderate” Islamofacists, we are setting them up to be the next ISIS. They only differ from each other in who they want in charge.

Which means Obama is promising more ISIS.

I don't understand anyone in DC letting this happen. Obama is sending more weapons into Syria and assuring that it will stay destabilized? How does that help anyone but ISIS? And what's to stop the new, improved friendly rebels from joining ISIS, being defeated by ISIS, or attacking someone else in the area?

This is nuts. Obama still thinks Assad is the problem.

One way or another, the dunderheads in charge are going to drag us into a conflict with Syria.

I feel sick to my stomach...

Obama wants to hand Syria over to ISIS.

Its the only possible outcome of his strategy. The “moderates” can’t defeat Assad and even if they did, they couldn’t hold the country against ISIS.

Once again, Obama is using this as an opportunity to fight on the wrong side, and arm the wrong guys. And the media still don’t get it—nor does McCain, or anyone in the Republican establishment.

And if the media get it, you certainly wouldn’t know it by the way they spin these stories.

Yeah. They keep repeating this BS about how Obama has changed course and now wants to arm the "moderates". The so called moderates are the ones he wanted to arm in the first place.

His Arrogance will do anything to knock of Assad because that is what the Saudis have directed him to do. He doesn’t have the least inkling of having the “Syrian Freedom Fighters” go after ISIS. His fellow Sunnis are off limits other than a “fake for show” random bombings.

I agree.

I have said from day one to stay out of the Syrian war because our enemies and their backers like Iran and Russia are on opposite sides, fighting it out. That's good for us.
A few years ago that was not a popular stand since everyone seemed to want Assad's head.-Tom

Amazingly, the seat of Liberty, Freedom and Human Dignity in our small world- elected the exactly wrong persona.
