A group of small town teachers have a big idea called The Sleeve. It's a device that slips over the closer-arm of a door to prevent the door from being opened from the outside. The idea is to buy time for teachers and students during a school shooting.

I thought the official plan was hide and/or throw books at them and scream like a little girl.

$65 for every door in every room in every school. And they help you feel good about yourself.

The Sleeve is painted 'Safety Red' much like fire alarms, or fire extinguishers. The idea is to help address concerns of teachers being locked out of their classrooms. Nietzel said the point of the color is to make sure students understand and associate the color with other safety devices. "When students think of this, see this, they think 'ok safety,' this is not to be messed with unless it's a life or death situation," said Nietzel. The Sleeve is small enough to be hidden in a drawer away from students, or can be displayed by the door.

Ah, so students won't lock teachers out of their rooms because it's red. Why don't they just put a lock on the classroom door and paint it red? Wouldn't that work just as well?

Maybe they could put a shotgun in each room to protect against a shooter. They could paint it red and the kids would know that "this is not to be messed with unless it's a life or death situation."

I guess it depends on what kind of “feline nickname” is running that particular school district.

If kids today are even one-tenth as bad as I was, teachers should be locked out of their classrooms the very same day these things get delivered to the school. Red paint won't help.

Red is for safety. (Mauve is the universally recognised colour for danger.)

Why don't they just put deadbolts on the classroom doors, and give the teachers the master keys? (Probably because it would cost 1/10 as much from Home Depot as these red sleeve things. BTW, what if the teacher is too short to reach the automatic door closer?)

I want to hear what the local fire marshals think about this. Anything that prevents egress if accidentally deployed is a huge issue with these guys.

School kids are far more likely to be involved in a fire evacuation situation than an “active shooter” situation.
