Laki 1783 style is not as far fetched a result from this as once thought.

So let me see if I understand this: The ice that covers an erupting (or at least very active) volcano has subsided 15 meters in the area over the mouth of the volcano, and they’re saying it’s because the volcano caldera itself has collapsed? So none of the ice, say, melted under the assault of 3000+ degree molten rock?
To: Little Pig
They are measuring the subsidence miles away from the edge of the glacier.

the Million dollar question...indeed.
Most likely scenario is the collapse is due to it's magma chamber emptying into an ever expanding dyke.
Now then so the sheer weight of the glacier on top of Bardarbunga’s throat caused the 15 meter drop. However there is suggestions that while magma erupting now in the fissure event to the north is Bard's magma the EQ cycle in the volcano's caldera suggest that magma perhaps even virgin magma is streaming into it's storage pool.
So take a guess....the energy it took to so quickly rift the area is amazing...and somehow someway will be released in my opinion.

No the subsidence is directly under Bardarbunga’s caldera not at the fissure eruption.

Really?
In the surveillance flight yesterday a shallow, wide depression was observed on the surface of Dyngujökull, 10 km from the glacier edge. Another depression 6 km from the Dyngjujökull ice edge, which has been monitored over the last few days has deepened and is now 35 m deep.

Here is the Civil defense update...
Note where they reference the caldera like depression later in the update.
