A conviction on the attempted murder charge is punishable by up to life in prison.
No court dates were immediately set for Englert. But her bail has been doubled, from $250,000 to 500,000, cash-only. She remains incarcerated at the Salt Lake County jail.
According to court documents, Englert allegedly admitted to police that on Aug. 24, she gave birth to the baby in the bathroom of her Kearns home. She wrapped the infant in a towel, left her on the floor, and went to bed, according to charges. The next day, a Monday, she went to work, leaving the child wrapped in the towel on the floor.
After returning from work, Englert could see the infant was still alive because her fingers were moving, according to court records. The following morning — two days after the child’s birth — she put the baby in her neighbor’s garbage can at about 5:45 a.m.
Englert allegedly admitted to police that she put the baby in the trash, telling them, "I don’t want it."
The mother also allegedly told police that she did not know she was pregnant until the day she delivered the child into a toilet, and said she did not feed or care for the infant after the birth

Heartbreaking story. So many people would have been happy to have adopted that baby. Now, due to lack of care after birth, the child may have developmental delays. Whether the woman has a handicap of one sort or another, she had to know putting a baby in a trash can was wrong.
I am gratified to have my observations corroborated by an actual physician.

If she does have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome her mental functioning could be severely limited.
Hopefully she will get some mental evaluation while in custody.
If she honestly did not know she was pregnant I would guess that she is not fully functioning mentally.
Her father says that she is developmentally disabled. The cops say she graduated from high school.
From my point of view all that is required to graduate high school these days is attending the required number of days. That is no indication of mental competence.

I’m not so sure... You would think that stabbing a baby in the head with scissors and sucking their brains out, judges and politicians would know to be wrong too, but obviously not...

You make a good point, and in fact she didn’t kill the baby, she just neglected it in the extreme.
But I don’t understand why the baby never attracted any attention, why it didn’t cry.
Or does this woman live on her own?
Yes, she does look like she is developmentally disabled in some way, but like I said on another thread on this story, she is not so disabled that she didn’t get pregnant.
