Texas wants U.S. Supreme Court to help it block Confederate license plates
Washington Post ^ | 9/2/14 | Niraj Choksi

Texas’s attorney general wants the U.S. Supreme Court to weigh in on a five-year fight over specialty Confederate flag license plates.

The plates were sponsored five years ago last month by the Texas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a nonprofit group that describes itself as “neither political nor sectional” and “strives to honor and keep alive the memory of the Confederacy and the principles for which Confederates fought.” Supporters of such groups say they are simply celebrating those who fought for state’s rights, while critics say doing so ignores the involvement of those states in slavery.

The specialty plates were denied twice by the state. A Texas Department of Transportation panel voted down the specialty plates when the group first applied for them in August 2009, but the group re-applied when the program was turned over to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. A board there deadlocked on an initial vote and at a second meeting heard from a number of residents, most of them opposed to the application. The board then unanimously voted against granting the specialty license plate, spurring the group to sue on constitutional grounds.

They won’t stop trying to ban that flag. Just like the Redskin name.

If you don't think Perry is running for president then you're kidding yourself.

Nine other states have them,
including Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina,
which permitted the tags only after the Tennessee-based group sued and won.

Discounting the sons of confederate vets is discounting history.

Georgia has them.

But, of course, Georgia would. Even after dropping the NASCAR plates for individual NASCAR drivers, Georgia has 294 different speciality tags.

I kid you not.

Perry has evidently condemned the plates.

So much for him.

Greg Abbott is the AG and is running for Governor. I’m sure he’s trying to be on the PC side to get votes.

I used to have a stars and bars plate on my Jeep and the horn played Dixie. Yes you could actually buy a horn that played Dixie. The good ole days. LOL!!!!

Texas had 336 types and is in the process of removing many of them. The plates have to
have at least 200 users per year and there are some 87 or so that don’t meet that requirement.

I don’t see why the state of Texas should block them, but I would never put such a license plate on my car. It’s just asking for trouble. In fact I don’t drive around with bumper stickers either.

I live in the oven known as Columbia, SC and am a lifelong resident of the state.

Next door is my neighbor I have nicknamed every commie depending on the time of day. He and his spouse are from new England somewhere. They’ve been here for decades and hate it. Why they stay is beyond me. Everyone would love to see them go.

Years ago, I had some run ins with them. I also had a garage queen Jeep that faced his house, especially the windows he liked to spy from.

I ordered the brightest confederate tag I could find, bolted it on and let it stay. I can only hope it annoyed him all the time.
