uh-huh, and about how many of the family members, doctors, nurses, and hospital staff die caring for malaria parasite victims.

There will come a point where medical staff decide "they are not paying me enough for me to risk death", and they will go home.

Eeeee-bolllll-aaaaaa ping!

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

What is the mortality rate for malaria?

In 2012 there were 207 million cases, with 627k deaths. A big number, but far less than 60-80% with Ebola.

That is the scary part.

Cui bono?

Do you find it odd that ebola, an rare exotic virus that had popped up briefly in isolated areas with a small cumulative number of deaths had elicited substantial research by several pharmaceutical companies including the giant Glaxo?

Do you find it odd that as the West African New Ebola has ravaged four countries suddenly several companies produce serums or vaccines that are all ready or near ready for human testing at the same time?

What prompted this intensive and expensive research of of virus that in forty years had killed less than 1000 people, IIRC?

For several decades we've been bombarded with news of the evils of big pharma and the obstructive FDA. Exotic diseases that affected minuscule portions of the global population didn't present sufficient future return on investment so little research was done. Yet, ebola, one of several filoviruses seems to have elicited broad and generous research efforts by GSK et al, largely hidden from public view. And in the midst of a global recession. Seems way out of proportion relative to the scale of the prior outbreaks.

So they really don’t want to be effective in stopping it do they?

I think those efforts may have been trickling along, and were biowar related. IIRC, the Soviets had (predominantly Cuban manned) research labs in Africa during the Cold War.

I have little doubt someone in the Pentagon wanted a countermeasure for weaponized Ebola or Marburg (just in case that had been done) and for troops in any event in case operations were ever conducted in Africa.

So some research has been likely going on behind the scenes, (certainly less well known than antidepressants, blood pressure medications, and the 'performance enhancers' that doubtless bring in significant income).

With the exception of an incident in a Reston research lab, filoviruses are generally not a problem on this continent-- or at least have not been. ZMapp and other anti-Ebola drugs are likely an offshoot of those research programs.

Money is only part of the picture, even though the majority effort will go where the money is to be made. The prestige of being the company to come up with (and the possible income from the patent on) cures or vaccines for more obscure diseases is worth something, too.

Does this in any way impact the immigration and border control policies of this country, directly or indirectly, for the purpose of introducing third world diseases to a first-world country where the profit margin might be greater?

Perhaps in some cases, but even playing with firecrackers and dynamite for fun and profit would pale in comparison to playing with a nuke, and Ebola is in the latter category.

I find the Ebola epidemic very frightening, yet no one seems to be talking about it. (Except here)
