The Great Nunquisition: Why the Vatican Is Cracking Down on Sisters
Time ^ | 31 Aug 14 | Jo Piazza

Today's generation of nuns are progressive women, two things the Church isn't used to

Nuns are an endangered species. They are dying and not being replaced. If you think the news is bad now, a world without nuns would be a far worse place. The nuns that I know are much too humble to tout their achievements and all of the good they contribute to society, but make no mistake, they are an integral part of the fabric that holds our civilization together.

In 2014 there were just 49,883 religious Catholic sisters in the United States, down 13% percent from 2010 according to figures from the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate. To put it in greater perspective, that is a 72% decline since 1965.

The problem really goes back to what happened after Vatican II. Many convents were decimated because some used Vatican II as a reason to "breath new spirit into the Church." Problem is some people had no idea what spirit they were letting in.

The other problem is that feminism became rampant at the same time. It and those who live it are as responsible as the church for the decline in women's vocations to the religious life.

It seems to me that little was done to emphasize the beauty and power of a vocation. There has been too little emphasis on the value of women saints whose lives are examples of what the love of Christ can do.

Of course that’s true.

If the Vatican would change with the times, as if it could, which it cannot, would that fix vocations?

The homosexual "Catholic" organizations are more vocal than than any others, and there are a lot them.

They are more vocal because they are dying out.

There are a number of organizations whose main goal is to destroy the Church. What better way to make themselves look like they are part of the mainstream when they cloak themselves so as to deceive. This is not just a tactic to discredit Catholicism, but all denominations have individuals who use cloaking techniques intended to deceive.

Somewhere in the Bible there is a description of this technique: "Those who say they are Jews, are not, but do lie." Revelation, I think.

You can tell I am Catholic because I know it is in the Bible but I can't quote the verse.

And when I think back on those days of absolute turmoil I can't believe many of us got through it with half our brains intact.

My 11th grade catechism class consisted of cutting out pictures in magazines that showed "joy," next week it was "love" and so on. I remember thinking at the time, "When are we going to learn about the virtues?" Needless to say, with my mother's blessing I did not attend 12th grade catechism. They could not hold Confirmation over my head because I got that in the 3rd grade.

The best thing for the Church was JPII. They hated his guts. They hoped for a different pope next time around. And the next time. Now the feminists nuns are either old or dead with a Vatican cracking down on the ones who are remaining.

JPII had all of those Youth Days precisely for the future crop of vocations, religious and married. And there is nothing the left can do to stop it.

It's absolutely true that the population of Catholic nuns/sisters in the USA has declined drastically: from about 180,000 in about 1965, to less than 50,000 now. But it's not due to any imagined paranoid "Nunquisition." The downturn began right after the Second Vatican Council (1963-65) when a lot of the congregations, in an attempt to get modern, ditched their historic Constitutions, the common prayer life, and their apostolates (their work which they usually shared as a congregation, like running a chain of parish schools, a University or a Hospital), and started more individualized lifestyles and "careers," leading to what I'd call centrifugal disintegration.

I lived and worked with the Benedictine Sisters of Erie for 11 years as a Lay Associate, and I saw it happen up close and personal.

They're not in trouble for "working with the poor" or "being voices for the voiceless" or "serving the underprivileged" or any such thing. Women were leaving the convents in droves decades before the Vatican thought starting some "Apostolic visitation" --- an inquiry to find out what the heck's going on. It's because they deliberately divested themselves of their religious and vocation and identity, and then, surprise, there was no real reason to stay.

The sisters who still wear recognizable religious garb, who pray together on a regular daily prayer schedule, and who do the work they were founded to do (whether it's educating the handicapped or running a nursing home or religious publishing, evangelization, media work) --- are growing like kudzu.

Same thing with men's religious orders: the modernists are in rapid decline, the newer orders ("new faithful") are growing.

Sinsinawa Dominicans, largely post-Christian, semi-secularist feminists, avg. age probably about 75
They'll cease to exist within 10 years.

Nashville Dominicans (Dominicans of St. Cecilia), vibrantly Catholic, avg. ag roughly about 25
They are brilliant, growing faster than they can build new living space, and the future is theirs.

Seven in 10 millennials consider themselves social activists, and 72% of them are eager to participate in a nonprofit young professional group.

But that's kind of hard to do when you spend all your free time barhopping and/or shacking up with your slacker boyfriend.

She's like the fool on the hill who "sees the world spinning 'round..."

She sees very clearly what's coming.

That would be enough to drive anybody who wasn't stupid crazy.

I was taught by Dominican nuns all through grade school. Too bad I didn’t realize at the time how lucky I was.

The nuns that were my teachers in my Brionx NY parochial school were Dominican, from Blauvelt NY and the last one to be my teacher was in 1962. All wore full and very uncomfortable looking habits for the hot weather. There was no so called secular ‘humanists’ or secular feminists.

"the Church isn't used to..."

"This article is a push for the Vatican to get with it."

Thanks, Stanne. Good catch!

I love to parse the sly words and combinations of words of the marxist, anti-religion media. In fact it's one of my favorite things to do on FR.

Many of today's MSM journalistas are so cleverly-subtle with words and word-play that it's difficult for the lay person to catch all the bias, propaganda and untruths they sneak into their output.

It used to be one had to read BETWEEN the lines. Today, one has to read and re-read the LINES themselves to get the slanted drift.

The devious hand of old Lucifer himself guides the current creative writing of the agenda-driven contemporary media. Each one of us has to do self-training to analyze words and phrases no matter how minute....and to expose the murky nuances of these evil scribes just as freeper Stanne did in his above post.

They have tried to do with the Catholic Church what other progressives have done top to Episcopal and other mainline Protestant denominations. By the numbers, you can see they have done a pretty good job of taking down the Church.

I read the article at Drudge I think. Said the Nuns “want to work for an employee that values their work”

I thought that was strange...dont they want to work for God/Christ?

The article also referred to most Nuns as “progressive” Well I know what progressive means bin Liberal circles, God/Christ nor The Holy Spirit needs them anyway.

Progressive means they support gay marriage and murder of God`s unborn children.

And if they deny that, well just ask the US Nuns what party they support and there lies your answer.

Also it`s important to remember that a person could be a Nun a Priest or even Pope, and still not personally know Jesus or even be saved
