(Reuters) - Crowds sang and danced in the streets of a seaside neighborhood in Liberia on Saturday as the government lifted quarantine measures designed to contain the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.
Faced with the worst Ebola outbreak in history, West African governments have struggled to find an effective response. More than 1,550 people have died from the hemorrhagic fever since it was first detected in the forests of Guinea in March.
Residents of the impoverished seaside district of West Point in Monrovia were forcibly cut off from the rest of the capital in mid-August after a crowd attacked an Ebola center there, allowing the sick to flee.
The quarantine sparked protests and security forces responded with tear gas and bullets, killing a teenaged boy.
But at dawn on Saturday, the community woke up to find the soldiers and barricades gone.
"I tell God thank you. I tell everyone thank you," said Koffa, a female resident of West Point. Others danced in the streets chanting slogans like "we are free" while others rolled about on the asphalt pavement in celebration.

Liberia’s NGO-spending based faux-national government is ending a faux-quarentine.
No, the quarantine was a bad move. Having an uncontrolled outbreak inside that quarantine zone would have been a disaster there and outside the zone. They needed to do the work to find the infected and remove them, and that’s what they need to do now.

While many will stay, live and die there, I think there will be people who scatter from the slums, hoping and praying they are not sick. Some may be, and that could create entirely new clusters.

They must throw the best birthday parties.
They were starving in those prison-like camps. Courageous NGOs have been slow about sending aid there for some reason or other.
IOW, the epidemic is so out of control that quarantine measures are now useless.
They are doomed and don’t even know it.
Let them celebrate. They should have some joy before the end.
I was concerned too. Whatever the consequences, at least they are not starving now.
It’s not only a bad move, it sets a terrible precedent.
Anyone else considering a quarantine, will think twice about it now.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
