Another For-Profit College Bites The Dust

Nearly 10,000 students across the country are facing an uncertain future following the sudden collapse of another for-profit college system this week.

After a summer which saw the dramatic collapse of Corinthian Colleges, fellow for-profit education company Anthem Education is rapidly closing its doors after the company filed for bankruptcy this week.

Prior to filing for bankruptcy, Anthem Education had no fewer than 34 different campuses around the country. That number is in rapid free fall, with nine campuses shutting down Friday after the Department of Education failed to approve a deal that would temporarily keep them open.

Anthem’s collapse was a long time coming. A U.S. Senate investigation into for-profit schools found that company’s nationwide enrollment fell from almost 22,000 students to under 13,000 from 2006 to 2010, a decline that has continued since then. The company was losing millions each year, and over the summer, several campuses announced plans for major staff layoffs....

I am not familiar with these schools. Were they diploma mills taking in federal dollars?

I hate it for the students.

High school students, here's a rule of thumb: stay away from for-profit colleges.

And here's a specific test: If you're thinking of going to a for-profit school anyway, call up your state university (even if you're not planning to go there). Ask them if they accept the for-profit school's credits.

That will tell you a lot about the reputation of the for-profit school.

And something to add to my post #5.

These for-profit schools offer very little that cannot be found at your local community colleges. Furthermore, the community colleges are cheaper, often much cheaper.

And community college courses are respected. Their credits will very often transfer.

I really bothers me to see young people sign up at for-protit schools for medical assisting, computer programming, etc. Their local community college offers much better programs.

The price for going to (famous name omitted) was indeed cheaper than going to a state school here in Michigan; the problem was, almost all of it would have been debt, and despite the fact that I was told that my 30+ year old credits would transfer, none were really in my proposed new major, therefore I’d be facing a near-doubling of my current debt load and be nearly 60 before I graduated.
