The water system in Reserve, Garyville and Mount Airy has tested positive for a potentially deadly brain-eating bacteria, the state Department of Health and Hospitals said Wednesday. Officials say the Naegleria fowleri amoeba was found in samples taken from St. John the Baptist Parish's Water District No. 1, which serves 12,577 people in those east bank communities.

There are no known cases of illness from the bacteria. But officials warned residents to take precautions against getting water in their nasal passages, which is how the amoeba can move to the brain.

"Families can take simple steps to protect themselves from exposure to this amoeba, the most important being to avoid allowing water to go up your nose while bathing or swimming in a pool," state health officer Jimmy Guidry. "It is important to remember that the water is safe to drink; the amoeba cannot infect an individual through the stomach.

. "It is important to remember that the water is safe to drink;

Just don't let it go down the wrong 'pipe' or you'll be blowing it out through your nose.

Did it escape from the State capitol or something? That sounds like a politician disease.

Um, amoeba aren’t bacteria.

That's what is known in journalism as 'poetic license'.

In the real world, it's called being ignorant.

avoid allowing water to go up your nose while bathing or swimming in a pool

But if it does, an amoeba will eat your brain.

I think I'd skip the swimming, and I'd join a gym to do the bathing. What a nightmare.

Normally, this amoeba is harmless. It only becomes lethal when combined with Dihydrogen Monoxide. Unfortunately, this industrial pollutant is found throughout most urban plumbing systems, creating a deadly situation for our children. The EPA should be issued emergency powers immediately.

It is too late. The amoeba already affected a great many people as the 2012 election clearly shows.

A few hundred tons of chlorinated pool shock dropped by air, will fix that reservoir right up.

It is found in lakes and rivers, water parks, public pools etc across the country but I think particularly in Southern tier states and of course most dangerous during the summer when everyone is out.
